We woke up early the following morning, both awakened by a sense of urgency. It was a new day, and hopefully, this new day would bring answers that we were seeking about the mysterious scroll. I turned to Lilith, kissing her on the forehead. Her eyes were wide and awake.
“Good morning,” she smiled.
“I hope it will be,” I smiled back at her. “We’re really doing this?”
“Mhm,” she nodded, nestling next to me, wrapping her arms around my neck. “This is what we need to do. I feel it.”
I nodded. I had all sorts of conflicted feelings about this. It was difficult to trust anyone, especially after what we’d been through, but she was right. Lorna had already helped us once. If she wanted to betray us, she would have done so already. We would have known she wasn’t really on our side.
Slowly, we got up and started to get ready. The air in our bedroom held a sense of anticipation and determination. We had to do something… anything. The vampires’ attack proved that Constantine was getting impatient. This was merely a prelude for what he had been planning. I was sure of it.
I carefully checked the supplies we would need for our journey, ensuring that we were well-prepared for any situation. Maps, provisions, and the few essentials we could carry were neatly organized, ready to be packed. Lil was hovering around me, adding what she felt might also be needed. Her smile and her unwavering support filled me with both gratitude and reassurance. I still had doubts but I managed to push them to the back of my mind. We needed a positive outlook on this.
Our daughter, Cass, was still fast asleep in her own room, unaware of our impending journey. Lilith and I had made arrangements for her care while we were away, ensuring that she would be safe and well looked after.
As I looked around our chamber, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of our mission. The scroll held the potential to reveal information that could impact our kingdom and our family’s future. I felt the weight of responsibility but also the determination to seek the truth.
Finally assured that we’d got everything, I turned to Lilith. “We’re as prepared as we can be. I hope that the witch can provide us with the answers we seek.”
She nodded, her expression one of resolve, but I knew that she also had doubts, just like me. I could see it in the way she bit the inside of her cheek when she thought that no one was watching. It was those little things, revealing her concern and her apprehension. I walked over to her and caressed her cheek.
“It’ll be fine… whatever we find,” I assured her, but at the same time, I was trying to reassure myself as well.
Lilith and I made our way to the stables, where our loyal horses, Shadow and Ember, awaited us. The sun had just begun to cast its gentle morning light upon the kingdom, and a sense of purpose filled the air. We worked together to saddle the horses, our movements synchronized through years of partnership. The leather straps and buckles were secured with practiced hands, ensuring that our journey would be as comfortable and efficient as possible.
Ember, my daring companion, snorted softly in acknowledgment, and Shadow, Lilith's steadfast steed, nuzzled her affectionately. The bond between rider and horse was a powerful one, and we trusted our equine companions to carry us safely through the upcoming journey.
As we mounted our horses and set off from the stables, the journey ahead loomed large. We knew that it would be a challenging one, taking us over the towering mountains and through the dense woods to reach the witch's dwelling. But with our love and unity as our guiding forces, we were determined to face whatever trials awaited us.
“Do you remember the road?” I asked her, feeling the wind on my cheeks.
“No,” she shook her head. “”Not clearly, but there were some signs I do remember.”
I chuckled as we rode. “Well, that doesn’t sound like a good beginning.”
She frowned, but she was amused as well. “Why don’t you find the way then, smart guy?”
This time, I laughed. It felt good to laugh. “I was just joking. I’m trying to remember what you told me of the path last time you went. I’m sure we’ll find it together.”
Lilith and I rode in tandem as we began our journey through the rugged terrain. The path ahead was marked by the towering mountains that loomed in the distance and the dense woods that stretched out before us. It was a path we had taken together before, but each journey held its own challenges and mysteries. And this time, it would lead us to a new destination, one we hadn’t shared yet.
The horses’ hooves echoed with a steady rhythm as they navigated the winding trail. The sun, now fully risen, dappled the path with golden light, casting playful shadows on the ground. The air was filled with the earthy scent of the woods, a reminder of the untamed beauty of the kingdom we were sworn to protect.
As we rode, our thoughts were a mix of anticipation and determination. We contemplated the scroll and the unknown secrets it held, as well as the potential impact it might have on our kingdom. But more than that, our thoughts centered on our family—our daughter Cass and the safety and well-being of our people.
I had no idea what the truth might be, or where it would lead us. But I knew that the journey was long and arduous. I would end up before Constantine, whatever the scroll might mean. And that would be the point when everything would change. I believed that Lilith knew that as well, and we were slowly nearing that moment. Constantine was growing restless, itching to expand his territories, to have us all fall down to our knees and accept him as our supreme ruler. But I would rather die than see that happen.
As the day turned to dusk, Lilith and I continued to ride through the dense woods, pressing on despite the weariness that had settled into our bones. The canopy of trees above us filtered the fading light, casting long shadows that seemed to reach out for us. The horses’ hooves still echoed with determination, their steps steady and unyielding. The journey had been long, and the woods around us were filled with the mysterious sounds of nocturnal creatures stirring from their slumber.
In the fading light, our thoughts were a mix of exhaustion and resolve. We knew that we couldn’t stop here, not in the heart of the forest where the night held its own secrets and dangers. Not only that, but there could be vampires here, hiding in the shadows. We couldn’t risk being attacked here. We had to press on, even as our bodies yearned for rest.
I turned to Lil. Our eyes met in a silent exchange of understanding and commitment. With a nod, we urged our horses forward, determined to reach our destination.
“You know,” I suddenly heard her speak. “Once we’ve unraveled this mystery and ensured the kingdom’s safety, maybe we should consider a proper vacation.”
The idea seemed both ludicrous as well as logical at the same time. I couldn’t help but chuckle loudly. “A vacation sounds like a great idea, Lil. In fact, it’s the best idea I’ve heard in a long time.”
