“I put myself in the closet and then wondered why it stressed me out.” He went on.

“That’s deep, P. I’m surprised you got any brain cells left after Arsen vacuumed your face, but I’m impressed,” Kruger said.

I rolled my head in his direction. “Why are you still here?”

“Because I’m getting mixed signals, bro. Practically whiplash. Stay. Go. Look. Bleach my eyes. I haven’t even had breakfast,” he grumped.

“Ryan invited me,” I announced. “To breakfast.”

“He did?” Matthew asked.

I kissed his nose because I wanted to. “That okay with you?”

His head bobbed, and I smiled.

Kruger sighed loudly and dug his phone out of his pocket. It appeared beside my head. “Give me your number.”

“Why?”

“Why?” He was incredulous. “Because we’re sharing custody.”

Matthew groaned. “I’m a grown man.”

Kruger scoffed. “Yeah? Well, you were just necking in the parking lot like a tween high on hormones.”

“You watched,” he retorted.

Laughing under my breath, I grabbed Kruger’s phone and typed in my number. “Here.”

Kruger tapped his screen a few times. “I sent you a text. Save my number.”

I nodded.

“P,” Kruger called, “you good? You riding to Shirley’s with Arsen?”

Matthew nodded.

“Don’t worry. I won’t tell your sister what I witnessed here today,” Kruger told him. “She likes horror movies, not porn,” he muttered as he headed toward his Audi. Over his shoulder, he called, “I’ll see you guys in a few.”

When he was gone, I pulled Matthew around to the passenger side of the wagon but leaned against the door instead of opening it. Tugging him between my widened legs, I palmed his hips. “How about we put a label on it?”

“On what?” He feigned ignorance, but he couldn’t hide the flash of hope in his eyes.

“On us.”

His tongue came out to wet his lower lip. I could still taste him on mine. “We haven’t been on a date yet.”

“I know what I want.” And I also suspected that having a label would settle some of his insecurity. At least, I hoped it would. “But we can wait until after our date if you want.”

“What kind of label?” he asked.

I stifled a smile because his interest was proof I’d read the situation right.

“Exclusive boyfriends.” I was decisive.

A whole storm of emotions tumbled over his face. “You wanna be my boyfriend?”

Until I can make it even more permanent. “Yes.”
