“Are you alright?”

No! I wanted to scream but bit my tongue. I got the feeling that Estella was fragile. She’d obviously been here a long time.

“How long have you been here?” I asked instead.

“A while.” She frowned as she considered my question. “I’m not entirely sure.”

Alarm bells rang in the back of my mind. She seemed genuine, but I couldn’t help but think that I knew her. That was impossible since I had just met her. I returned her frown.

“How long have I been here?” I looked around at the expanse of liquid that filled the space.

Above me was brightness but nothing more. I considered what Estella had called this place. The Between. She’d said that being here meant we were neither alive nor dead, which would be impossible, but I couldn’t get my brain fog to clear enough to ask why or even how. Being here was a mystery. The answers had to be in my head. If I could just remember what happened before I got here.

Instinctively, I reached for a presence in my mind, but there was nothing. I was completely alone inside my own head. My heart sped up as that discovery made me panic, but I wasn’t sure why. All I knew was that being alone inside my head was bad. I got the feeling that I had never really been alone.

“You haven’t been here long.” Estella watched me with her unnerving eyes and smooth countenance.

Was she even real? I reached my hand out and touched her shoulder. Her skin felt as smooth as it looked, plus she was solid, which meant she was real or as real as one could be in this place.

“You said we are neither alive nor dead, so what exactly are we?”

“The Moon Spirit brought us here for safe keeping. This is its domain.”

The Moon Spirit? Who the hell was….

An image popped into my head of a white wolf that seemed to glow with ethereal power. Its dark blue eyes stared at me, and I silently begged it to help me remember.

Pearl?

The name startled me, but the voice was different. It wasn’t Estella’s but deep and masculine. It made my knees weak and my heart long for whomever the speaker was. I followed the thought, diving down deep into my subconscious.

Green-gray eyes appeared, and I recognized them. The gray was the man, and the green represented something else. Depending on the mood, the colors would deepen. A strong jawline with stubble tickled my palm every time I touched it. He had dark hair that I loved to run my fingers through while breathing in his scent and imprinting it on my soul.

Rylan.

The name jumped to the forefront of my mind, making my stomach lurch. How could I have forgotten him?

‘You haven’t forgotten him,’ a voice said kindly in my head.

‘He’s my mate.’ I desperately wished I was with him right now instead of trapped here.

‘You aren’t trapped here,’ the voice corrected, pulling up a memory and showing it to me. ‘You were injured badly. Your body is healing, supervised by your wolf and mate. You’ll be able to return soon.’

Tears pricked my eyes as I imagined Rylan hovering over my broken body, probably beating himself up for letting me get hurt. I didn’t blame him. It had happened while saving him. I’d do it all over again if given the choice.

‘Why did you bring me here?’ I wanted nothing more than to return to my body, to my mate.

‘It was the safest place to put your soul, plus I wanted you to meet Estella.’

I looked back at the naked girl I was still holding onto. Her lips lifted into a small smile, and a feeling of déjà vu came over me. I had met her before, sort of. I met her wolf. The white one who I kept mistaking for the Moon Spirit.

“It’s you,” I whispered, looking her over again with new eyes. “What are you doing here?” Her wolf wasn’t here with her, which seemed strange.

‘Estella is the reason I sent you here.’

I looked at her and noticed tears swimming in her eyes as the Moon Spirit spoke to both of us. She had been stuck here for who knew how long without her wolf in this place of limbo.

‘How do we get out of here?’ I mentally asked the Moon Spirit.
