In sync, car doors facing the house open up, and men with assault rifles get out.

“No. That’s not my family,” Darragh grits out.

“Oh my God.” I shudder.

These are not bratoks, the men who report to my father’s enforcer, Maksim, who are brothers I might reason with.

No, these look like Papa’s mercenaries from Russia…

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Darragh

Hearing the words Russian mercenaries, my blood runs as cold as the ice in their veins.

Sophie is downstairs.

The safe room is one floor above me.

Two sets of steps to get my daughter to safety.

J.P. coos in my arms like my world isn’t unraveling.

My son…

These monsters outside are here for my son.

And my woman.

Not happening.

“Sophie! Code Black,” I yell to her. “Now!”

Why is she on the first floor alone?

“Oh God!” Ana whispers, pulling slippers on her feet. “This isn’t happening.”

“It’s happening.” My senses go on alert, and I smell Sophie’s powdery scent in the doorway.

Wow, she listened.

But she thinks the safe room is to protect her from a river rolling down our street, threatening to drown everyone.

“Daddy?” Her frightened face weakens me.

“Safe room, in the attic, right now. Both of you.” I put the baby in Ana’s arms, even though letting go of him kills me.

“Daddy?” Sophie’s voice is high and frightened. “But it’s not raining.”

“I taught you no questions. Do it.”

Sobs starting, Sophie takes off down the hall.

Pulling Ana’s arm, I head there with her. “Get into the safe room and close the door behind you. Lock yourselves in. Now.”

I dreaded the day I would have to send Sophie in there alone. It sickened me when I had the thing designed, calming myself with bullshit lies: I’ll never need it.

Then I go and steal a Bratva princess from my brother. A pregnant one, who just gave birth to the Astoria Brotherhood heir.
