Darragh

Cormac stands there like a warrior. I recognize it because he looks like our older brothers.

“What are you doing here?” I ask him.

He shoves a massive gun inside his leather jacket and looks down at the man in black without a face. “Is that your way of thanking me, Dar?”

“Why are you talking with the brogue?”

“It’s always lived in the back of my throat. It’s all we heard growing up.” He stares at me. “I heard you talking without it in school.”

A small smile lifts my lips. “And we liked to pull pranks on people.”

That’s where our happy reunion ends when he brings up our past.

I grab him and pull him away from the broken glass. Without a door, my house is exposed and more of these motherfuckers can crawl inside.

“Speaking of which, thanks for telling Ana that.”

“Where is she?”

I let him go and glance at the dead body again. “I think the first question is, who is that you killed?”

“Hitman hired by the Cosa Nostra.” Cormac pulls the body away from the door, dragging him by the feet.

“Why the hell does the Italian mafia want me dead?” I step over the trail of blood.

“So the extraction team can take Stasia.”

My legs go weak. “What?”

Everything around me spins out of control.

“The Las Vegas Mafia figured out who she is.” Cormac rubs his face. “They know Alexei will pay a fortune to get her back.”

“How do you know this?”

“Because they offered me a cut if I gave her to them.” The guilt in his voice is palpable.

Rage boils through me, though. “That’s why you came here a couple of weeks ago.”

“Yeah, but not to hand her over. To bring her back to her father myself and ask him…” He looks down.

“Ask him what? For the bounty?”

“To take me in.” Cormac paces. “I know what Kieran will do to me.”

“You think Alexei Koslov will be lenient with you for knocking up his daughter? Getting her hooked-on drugs? Keeping her a prisoner?”

“I don’t know,” he screams. “She didn’t want her father to know she wasn’t kidnapped. I figured she’d keep my secret if I kept hers.”

“That was one hell of an assumption that she’d go back to Astoria not kicking and screaming. And lie for you.”

“I was willing to take the risk if she knew death dealers were coming for her.”

I grab him by the jacket. “Change of plans.”

“No shit, change of plans.” He looks me up and down. “Do you really love her?”
