“I do. She’s staying with me. And so is the baby.”

“My baby.” Cormac’s lips snarl.

“He’s mine. My name is on that birth certificate, just like I promised.” Pushing my face into his, I add, “We’re going to say I came to Vegas for the weekend, slept with her and went home without realizing I’d gotten her pregnant.”

“Her father will kill you.”

“I’m assuming Kieran won’t let that happen.” I take a breath. “Lachlan is on his way to get us out of here and bring us home.”

Cormac steps back, and his jaw quivers, hearing Lachlan. “What?”

He really is more afraid of our brothers than Ana’s father.

Most people are, which is why the O’Rourkes are more powerful.

“I want to see her,” Cormac says, his eyes wandering to my staircase.

“They’re in my safe room.”

Cormac tilts his head. He knows where it is. We weren’t always enemies like this.

“Just one look. Just one…” He bites down on his lower lip. “I came back to warn you. But they beat me here. And since you’re bringing Stasia back, there’s no use for me. Please, let me just say goodbye. And that I’m sorry. You’ll never have to see me again. I pulled together some money. I can hire a mule to get me into Mexico via the Pacific Crest Trail. There’s a clinic down there I can work for, make more money under an alias and live out my days alone.”

The details twitch my brain.

He’s still my twin. Deep inside I still love him. I’m hardwired to. We’re blood.

“So go.” I point to the blown-out door.

“I want to see my son. Just once.”

“Trust me, when I say, mentally, you don’t want that.” I pull him close to me, the Badger knocking between us. “Once you hold your kid, you can’t let go. That’s in our blood, too. Just leave.”

When I push him off, he grabs the rifle.

Fuck.

Before Cormac can wrestle it from me, a spray of bullets takes out the windows in my living room. I hit the floor, but Cormac gets on top of me, protecting me.

The extraction team.

Cormac reaches for his gun to fire back, getting in a few shots, yelling in Gaelic.

I wiggle out from under him and dive for the stairs, my hearing nearly gone at this point.

Not a step in, excruciating pain explodes in my arm, and my entire shirt is covered in blood.

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Ana

“Sophie, I really need to check on your father.”

“No.” She stands up. “You can’t go out there.”

The worry in her voice soothes the ache in my chest that she’s no longer mad at me.

“I’ll be fine.” My eyes wander to the door, and I unlock the bolts. “Watch over J.P. just like you’ve done for me while I shower. He needs you,” I say, my voice cracking.
