Always an O’Rourke, playing the long game and working the angles.

“How long since you talked to Eoghan?” I ask Darragh, putting my son back into his mother’s arms to check my brother’s wound.

“About two hours at this point.” He clears his throat. “He said Lachlan would be wheels up in thirty minutes.”

“That means we’ve got a few more hours to wait.” I look around. “This thing secure?”

“Yes,” Darragh answers.

“What happened downstairs?” Ana asks.

Sophie’s eyes find mine, and I won’t fill her head with visions of exploding brains.

“The Escalades left,” Darragh answers for me. “But one guy hung around.”

“I took care of him,” I say proudly, also signing my death warrant with the Vegas Cosa Nostra.

I have no choice but to embed myself with my family and endure whatever punishment they’ll hand down if it means they’ll protect me and keep me alive.

Ana stares at me and when she nods, I think she’s possibly forgiven me.

None of this makes up for all the harm I’ve caused, but it’s a start.

CHAPTER FORTY

Darragh

My arm throbs, but my head is clear.

Sophie fell asleep next to J.P. on a bundle of blankets about two hours ago.

Cormac keeps checking my bandage for swelling and warmth around the wound. Along with my head for signs of a fever. Despite his tattoos, rakishly long hair, and brusque nature, he’s a faint version of the brother I remember.

But now he’s more like my older brothers.

Maybe it was only a matter of time before one of us succumbed to who we really are. What’s in our genes.

As angry as I’ve been with him, I can’t hate him. He’s the other half of me.

And he saved my life. If the Cosa Nostra was willing to pay him for Ana, he could have let me die, gotten inside my house, taken her and…

I shudder to consider that outcome.

But no. He saved me, saved her, and here we are. Waiting for our family, who will deliver him a harsh punishment, regardless of his recent heroic deeds.

I glance at Ana.

My brothers know she faked her kidnapping. To them, she may be just as guilty.

I have one priority, making sure Sophie and the baby are safe. Next, is keeping Ana and the baby as mine. If that means giving up my freedom, I’m all in.

“Where do you think they went?” Ana asks, laying on the floor next to me. “The mercenaries.”

“I’m sure they’re regrouping. They might have done a walk through after Cormac dragged me in here and figured out they weren’t hauling off a Bratva princess so easily.”

“Are we setting up Lachlan to walk into an ambush?”

Her question sparks a look between Cormac and me.
