“He’s smarter than that,” Cormac answers.

“This isn’t his first rodeo,” I say.

I close my eyes, Ana’s warm body next to mine soothing me. The hum of the air filters pumping makes me go in and out of sleep.

It’s seeing a face blown off that twitches me awake.

Time is lost and now the pain is just a dull nuisance.

Coughing brings me fully awake and when my eyes open, I wipe crud away to see Sophie sitting in one of the chairs.

“Breathe through your nose, sweetie,” Ana whispers.

“Soph, you got this. Focus.” Cormac is on the other side of her, her fingers intertwined with his tattooed hand.

“I’m trying.” Sophie’s stressed voice snaps me awake.

“What’s the matter?”

“She’s having a stress attack,” Cormac answers.

“It’s also been hours since any of us ate anything,” Ana says.

“I’m getting her meds.” I lift off the carpet and every muscle in my body aches.

“I’ll go,” Cormac says.

“We’ll both go,” I say.

Ana’s breath hitches. “I think Cormac and I should go. Stay with your daughter.”

I snort a laugh. “Do you really think I’d let you just walk out of here?”

“No one wants to hurt me,” Ana stresses.

“Taking you away will kill me,” I say.

“Daddy, no.” Sophie wins, I can’t leave her again.

“Cormac, my security app. Check it.” I push my phone toward him.

“No signal.”

“This place is a tomb.” I exhale, getting to my feet. “Cormac, take the Badger.”

My arm screams in pain as I lift my phone, ready to check it as soon as it picks up a signal.

Ana holds Sophie’s head against her chest. “Someone can be right outside this door.”

“Open it up.” Cormac swings the rifle’s strap over his head. “I’ll get in a few shots and take care of it.”

The door wheezes open and sure enough, a mammoth of a man is standing there.

God, we’re so stupid.

And dead.

I’m so wrecked with stress, fear, lack of food, and loss of blood that I can’t see straight. Maybe it’s best I don’t see my own death dealer.
