I pull Sophie under me, but she shrieks…

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Ana

“Uncle Lachlan!”

Icy fear spreads through me, my eyes settling on Lachlan O’Rourke.

My memory doesn’t do him justice. Or the last two and half years have made him look more dangerous than I remember.

Or my tolerance for evil men has waned, living with an angel like Darragh.

That doesn’t do anything to lessen the sheer terror I feel deep in my soul about this man. This monster who married my sister and got her pregnant.

I won’t trust second-hand comments that she’s happy. I’ll only take her word for it. I’ll know if she’s lying to me.

Sophie wiggles away from her father and runs right into her uncle’s massive open arms.

Instincts have me stretching to claw her away.

But Darragh wouldn’t let Lachlan touch his daughter if she was in danger. It’s his niece for crying out loud.

“Come ‘ere, angel.” Lachlan bends to pick up Sophie.

When he does, a lithe figure from behind him catches my attention.

The blonde hair. The delicate shoulders. The blue eyes like mine.

“Katya?” I get to my feet, my legs shaky.

“Stasia?” she calls out the name I ran away from.

The life I left behind put her in danger.

“It’s me.” Tears clog my burning throat.

With Sophie in Lachlan’s arms and out of my way, I run to Katya and hug my little sister.

Oh God, that scent I remember is still there. She smells of vanilla and powder.

Sweet and pure as ever.

“I can’t believe you’re here,” Katya shrieks.

“Me! Why are you here?” I turn to Lachlan and punch him. “You brought my sister to a siege?”

Lachlan comically brushes his arm like a gnat bumped into his chest. “Hello to you, too.” The grinning stops when he advances on me. “Your sister insisted she come the minute we found out you were in danger. I don’t like saying no to my wife. I contacted a local family to get their asses over here. I came prepared for a war, but apparently once word got out I was on the way, they took off. Declan Reid assured me himself whoever blew out the back door and the windows was gone.”

“I would have run through bullets for you, Stasia.” Katya digs her fingers into my arms. One finger sports a humungous diamond ring. “Please, tell me what happened to you!”

“I… I don’t know where to begin.”

“I’ll start. I’ve been worried sick.” She sounds mad.

This is where things get sticky because Cormac kept me from contacting her.

“I got postcards,” she continues. “But from what I’m learning, you didn’t send them.”
