“I didn’t want you to worry, mladshaya sestra.”

“But she did worry,” Lachlan hisses, swinging Sophie.

Darragh staggers out into the attic’s main room, holding his bandaged arm. “Does this mean my house is secure, Lach?”

“It’s secure. Now, what the f…” Lachlan bites his lip. “Somebody better start speaking fast about what the heck is going on.”

Cormac emerges from the back corner. “It’s my explaining to do.”

“What in f’s sake did you do to yourself, doc?” Lachlan gives Cormac’s shocking appearance a once-over.

He shows off his tattooed arms and inked hands like his brothers. “You don’t like it because now I look too much like you.”

“No one looks like me. I’m one of a kind,” Lachlan answers him with a leer.

They know what Cormac’s done. Darragh’s words how his brothers worship women means he won’t get a warm welcome from his family, even though they’ve come to rescue us.

Darragh’s hand brushes on my back, as I hold my sister. “Happy?”

“Yes.” I let her go, reluctantly.

“Hi. I’m Katya.” She extends her hand to Darragh. “I don’t think we’ve ever met.”

“I’m going to be your brother-in-law.” His eyebrows pinch together. “Wait, I already am.”

“Does that mean I get a hug?”

“You sure do.” Darragh bends down and with his uninjured arm, squeezes my sister.

“You got here fast!” Sophie’s arms are clutched around Lachlan’s neck like a teddy bear.

“Aye,” he answers and gives all of us a quick inspection. “Family meeting in five minutes. Men only.”

“What?” I bite out.

“I won’t exclude Ana from anything that has to do with her,” Darragh says.

Lachlan blinks, like he’s not used to someone challenging him, then stares down at Sophie.

“Show me your room, little one.” The enforcer gingerly walks down the narrow steps with Sophie tight in one arm.

I realize it’s to keep her from going all the way downstairs, which means it’s a shit show. The fact that he cares for Sophie in that way, cracks the shell around my heart about him and gives me a glimmer of hope that he’s been treating my sister with the same kind of tender care.

Squeezing Darragh’s hand and then letting go, I tug Katya aside.

“Look me in the eye and tell me you married him willingly.”

“Well, that’s a long story.” She blushes.

My eyes slip closed, remembering the horrible story Darragh got from Eoghan.

“I’m so, so sorry I wasn’t there to protect you.” I stroke her cheek. “Darragh told me that groom beat you up. It’s all my fault.”

“No, it’s Papa’s fault.” She’s all grown up, and it aches that I missed it. “Plus, if you stayed, Papa would have married you to that man in Boston.”

“But if I never left in the first place…”

“I don’t want to think about that.” Katya shakes her head. “Lachlan saved me. And I… I kind of saved him.” She holds my hands, squeezing them to convince me. “I’m so in love with him. And we’re having a baby.” Her hands drop to hug her stomach.
