“Sure.” She lifts on her tippy toes and presses a kiss to his scarred cheek.

She looks as graceful with him as when she dances.

My stomach unclenches, and I don’t think I’ll spend another moment worrying about her.

“And this is the new little prince,” Lachlan says, reaching for him.

My tiny baby, on the other hand…

“Ana, is it okay if my brother holds J.P.?” Darragh looks over his shoulder at Lachlan.

“Have you had the Tdap shot?” I ask him.

“I have, Stasia.” Lachlan folds his arms. “We all got one when Kieran’s sons were born.”

“Then of course.” I hand him to Lachlan. “I’m going by Ana now. You know, for Anastasia. My mother called me Stasia, but I don’t feel like that girl anymore.”

“Aye, I’ll call you whatever you like. My wife was worried sick about you,” he speaks with vitriol toward me, but it proves how much he cares about her.

I’ll take it because I deserve his wrath.

“And me her,” I challenge him.

We lock eyes, and in that moment, we form an understanding that ends with a mutual nod.

A noise outside on the street makes me jump.

“It’s okay.” Darragh steers me to the window. “Look.”

I glance that way, and lose my breath seeing cop cars and a man with intense dark hair, I recognize as Riordan O’Rourke speaking to them.

“Riordan is briefing the police sergeant who’s in Declan Reid’s pocket,” Lachlan says.

That must be the other man with a head full of dark auburn hair wearing a navy blue peacoat.

“Briefing what exactly?” I ask.

“Just to get the story straight about what happened,” Darragh answers. “The neighbors called in hearing gunshots.”

“They’ve been taking statements for hours, according to Declan,” Lachlan says.

“Who is that pregnant woman with Riordan?” I notice a very pretty brunette with short hair also speaking to the cops.

“That’s his wife, Priscilla,” Lachlan answers, and hands me back my son. “She works for us.”

“While she’s pregnant?”

Lachlan smiles. “She does surveillance right now.”

“How bad is it downstairs?” I say, and discreetly latch J.P. onto my breast.

“Bad.” Darragh strokes my head while I feed our son. “Declan Reid called an emergency clean-up crew. They should be here any minute.”

“Have you ever met him?”

“No,” Darragh says right away.

“Are we really going home tonight?” I ask, feeling dizzy from this sudden change in our lives.
