“Where?” he asks.

“Las Vegas. You’re a wanted man there once you left your remanded rehab.”

“You’re going to let them put me in jail?” Cormac says, sounding cocky.

Muttered curses fly around the table. My brothers have all committed worse crimes than conning tourists out of a few bucks. They never felt steel cuffs on their wrists, let alone sat in a jail cell.

“I didn’t say that,” Eoghan responds to him.

“Eoghan, I’ll call Taryn,” I say. “He’s got the right connections.”

“I did some digging. I know who to go see. Your case will be dismissed. Ana’s, too.” Eoghan pulls his jacket closed. “We need to get going.”

“Then what?” I ask before Cormac.

Eoghan’s look sends shivers down my spine.

They’re sending him to that torture/training camp in Ireland, where he’ll learn the meaning of discipline and authority. It’s cruel, from what I heard, but Cormac will benefit in the end if he’s going to be working for Kieran.

Standing again, I say with force in my voice, “You all need to know, there was a gun pointed to my head earlier today. I’m alive now because of Cormac.”

“We’re supposed to protect each other!” Kieran slams his fist on the table. “No one gets extra points for killing someone trying to murder one of us.”

“Otherwise, I’d be the king with the most points.” Lachlan pushes from the table like he wants to put his feet on it.

His humorous comment deflates the tension.

“I just mean—”

“Kieran’s right, Dar.” Cormac stops me. “I fucked up and saving you isn’t my get-out-of-jail-free card. I’d have pulled that trigger even if they were dragging me to my death.”

My chest heaves. I’ll give anything if one day we can be best friends again.

Ana slides her hand into my lap.

Almost anything.

CHAPTER FORTY-THREE

Darragh

With my house securely locked up and packed suitcases in our grasp, we board Kieran’s private jet at Sea-Tac.

Sophie sits with Priscilla at a table and looks out the window. She’s visibly excited about being on this plane. It’s not the first time. This thing had been sent for me a few times to fly home and lend my special kind of doctorly magic. Maybe that’s why my brothers dropped everything on a holiday to come help me.

There’s a lot I have to explain to Sophie, she thinks this is a visit and not a full-on move. Perhaps, when I travel back to sell the house, I’ll bring her so she can say goodbye to her friends.

Once Sophie is settled in a new school, I’ll find her a Brownie troop. And then start looking for a job.

I had cleared my surgery schedule to be home with Ana and the baby. I just need to formally resign.

I sit with Ana who has J.P. in his baby car seat between us, while Cormac sits in the back with Kieran, Riordan, and Lachlan in a meeting area where they exchange tense words with him.

In the row behind them, three men in leather jackets watch a movie on a television mounted above them. The Quinlan brothers have been an extended part of our family forever. They too dropped everything to be here for me.

We descend and my heart leaps, but it’s just to drop off Eoghan and Cormac in Las Vegas. In addition to Cormac’s court case, Eoghan has the task of sitting down with the Vegas Cosa Nostra who hired those mercenaries and explain there is no more bounty on my Ana’s head. I don’t envy him, but this is the life they’ve chosen to live.

I felt Cormac’s eyes on my son during the flight. James Patrick O’Rourke is my son. I wanted him the minute I touched Ana. Cormac never wanted him.
