“You are due soon?” The driver takes a road that hugs the Sound. His accent is unsettling after all these years not hearing Papa and his henchmen.

“Yeah. Any day.”

He twists around and peers at me. “Not in my car, please.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” I pull the rain slicker I borrowed from the hall tree down by the hood and sit back.

Clutching Sophie’s knapsack, my worry for her grows. She’s going to a party with all kinds of sweets. What if she sneaks something?

“We are here,” the driver says and glances back at me. “I prefer cash tip.”

And I have zero dollars.

“I don’t have any on me. This was an emergency.” I show him the tip on the cell screen. “I left you a big tip on the app.”

“What? I must share that with pig bosses.”

“Too bad, asshole.” I yank the door handle at the same time he opens his own door.

“Asshole?” he sneers.

“You heard me,” I shout, but getting out of the car isn’t easy since I’m lugging all this extra weight.

“You bitch.” It happens so fast, he’s there, pulling me out by the rainslicker.

Would he really assault a pregnant woman? I manage to get away by kicking him.

I turn to run and slam right into Darragh.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Darragh

Horrified, I realized I left the house without Sophie’s EpiPen.

I begged the one mother I trust to keep an eye on her, especially around the snacks, so I could race home to grab it.

The relief from seeing Anastasia across the street holding Sophie’s knapsack damn near broke me. Until I watched the driver grab her and pull her from his car like a rag doll.

What the fuck is happening?

The rage I felt, and how I wanted to see someone dead, stopped me in my tracks. Whatever I suspected my murderous O’Rourke bloodlust could make me do all these years, was nothing compared to how it changed me in an instant.

I was a new man. And not a good one.

Wanting to do harm settled into my bones, sunk in, and cemented itself. As a doctor, I’d taken a goddamn oath to do no harm.

Harm is all I see in front of me.

I dive into the street unaware of a bus that nearly flattens me. The damn thing didn’t even slow down. I jump back, frantic every second my eyes are torn away from Anastasia and that man.

With a clear path across the street, I run at top speed. “Hey! What are you doing?”

Ana spins around and slams into my chest. “You forgot Sophie’s EpiPen. I was bringing it to you.”

“I’m not talking to you.” I grab her wrist and shove her behind me to address the man hulking near her. “Who the fuck are you? How dare you grab my…” Swallowing, I don’t know how to finish that threat.

Shaking hands wave Sophie’s phone at me. “I ordered an Uber from the app. This animal got mad when I couldn’t give him a cash tip.” How her voice shatters turns my stomach. “I don’t have any money.”
