Taryn keeps his gun trained on us and with a wink, says, “Come with me if you want to live.”

CHAPTER EIGHTY-TWO

Eoghan

“Shane?” I blink the terror out of my eyes. “ Shane Quinlan? What the bleedin’ fuck are you doing here?”

“Lachlan sent me with the plane. It’s waiting for you at the airport.”

Great news. Only, Shane and Taryn have Jillian and me in handcuffs being led toward a dozen cop cars with lights and sirens blaring all over The Candy Store parking lot.

Taryn, with his veteran detective first grade cred, waves off hungry officers as he and Shane put us in his unmarked Ford.

Cops and their Fords…

“How did you deputize Shane?” I ask Taryn as I get into the backseat.

“They think I’m a bounty hunter,” he says with his thick brogue like mine.

It feels so fucking good to hear it again. Talking to Jillian’s ma made me feel like I was home.

With Jillian, I am.

Jillian’s ma…

Shite…

“Get these bleedin’ cuffs off me.” I wave my hands to Shane.

He reaches into the backseat and unlocks me. With my hands free, I turn to Jillian, who’s rocking like she’s gone catatonic on me.

“You’re fine, sparkles. We did it. We made it out.”

“I… I killed a man.”

“So did I. A few, actually. You’ll get over it.”

“No, I won’t,” she cries.

“Love, you did what you did to survive. He would have killed you and not thought twice about it.” I hold her. “I’ll be there for you every day. You got me. I’m yours. I’ll get you help.”

“He didn’t…touch me.” She shudders. “I mean, he held me down and lifted my skirt, grabbed my ass.”

“That’s why I emptied my clip into him.”

“Eoghan, that was the man I was seeing on the app.” She cries into my chest. “This is all my fault. I was so stupid. I was played. He knew who I was all along.”

It hits me like a tractor-trailer barreling down I-95. I’d almost forgot she went there thinking she was meeting Johnny. Lazaro tricked her.

This is my fault. I have to tell her the truth right fucking now. Fuck, my duffle bag has the mask in it.

“Taryn, my duffle, we have to—”

“It’s in the back cargo area. I went to your rental and broke in to get it,” he answers, flying down an empty two-lane highway toward the airport. “I knew we’d be heading to your plane without any fanfare or goodbyes.”

The ultimate Irish exit…

“Hold all those thoughts, sparkles.” I reach behind me and grab the leather bag.
