“You knew I had a nail appointment?” She’s breathless but holding on and not letting me wear her down.

“I know everything about you.” Except her court schedule apparently because those aren’t in her phone.

I make a note to hack her desk computer next.

Holding my hands, she says, “I’m sorry you don’t like the color.”

“Too dark.”

“Look who’s talking.” She stares right into my eyes. “This manicure cost me forty dollars, I won’t redo it.”

“I’ll pay for another.” I reach for my wallet, but her hands close around mine.

“Stop!”

We stare for a moment. I’m unraveling. I feel it. She’s got this hold on me I can’t explain or shake. But she’s forcing me to keep the crazy in check.

“I have to leave.” She hugs me and it breaks me inside. “Thank you. For stopping that car.”

Her lips brush my cheek and I clench my stomach to keep myself from dragging her to the villa. Why is she still denying me?

“Get to court, counselor,” I mutter to her, and open her car door. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

With no more words, she gets in, and I close the door. Watching her drive away feels like my heart being ripped out of my chest.

On my phone, I find the testing clinic and am thankful I have something to do for the next hour.

What the hell will I do until tomorrow morning, or my life, if I can’t convince this woman to be mine?

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Jillian

On Friday morning, my feet tap nervously as I watch Eoghan read Daniel’s notes on his brief. My brother feigned being unimpressed. Took out a red pen and started crossing out sections and scribbling his chicken-scratch in the margins.

With that scrawl, my brother could be a doctor. I wish he were. Then he wouldn’t be standing in the way of my promotion.

But then, I wouldn’t be sitting here with Eoghan, witnessing male beauty in its rawest form.

Yesterday’s confrontation in front of my gynecologist’s office rattled me. No doubt, his hacker brother figured out why I was there. Eoghan is feral for me. Like he’s the one in heat.

I can’t resist him anymore and excitement hums through me to suggest he and I go for a drink. Which will lead to sex with him. Sex I need Johnny to witness.

The ungodly act.

My core tightens. Am I playing with fire?

“Your boss liked the case you cited.” Eoghan rubs his chin, the scratch on his face fading. “But he thinks it infers the Borgias are organized crime lords.”

“They are!”

“Who will kill a prosecutor.” Eoghan lifts his gorgeous blue eyes at me.

I shudder. “Won’t that look obvious? We have a case against them and they find bodies floating in Lake Meade?”

Eoghan leans back, the chair squeaking under his weight, fury in his eyes. “Don’t even fucking say that.”

“Maybe you can help me figure out a way to make them pay? Maybe refer the case to the gaming board.”
