When I return to the cafeteria, I don’t tell anyone because I don’t want any of the children to overhear.

“Am I a prude, Scarlett?” I ask over the phone after telling her what had happened.

Scarlett skirts my question, “They shouldn’t be doing that at an elementary school. What did the administration say?”

“They’re going to investigate it.”

“I don’t understand why you didn’t film it as you were going in. Or at least had your phone ready for a picture.”

“Because I honestly thought I would find them having lunch together. Maybe holding hands. I didn’t expect full-on schoolgirl kink to be happening during the lunch hour at the elementary school behind an unlocked door.”

“Well, it’s a lot of people’s fantasies, especially those who work in schools, I imagine.”

“Is it yours?”

“No.”

“Mine either.”

“Really? I thought it’d be a fantasy of all elementary school teachers?”

“You’re filthy, Scarlett.”

“Speaking of fantasies, how’s it going with Sem? Has he contacted you?”

“Yesterday. His best friend, Ash, died on their last mission. Now he says he wants to go on vacation together.”

“Oh, how romantic. He’ll be in mourning.”

“Even if he is mourning the whole time, I want to be there for him.”

“You have a kind soul. Which hotel are you going to stay at, do you know?”

I tell her the hotel's name and add, “He’s going to book two rooms. He says he doesn’t want to rush things.”

“You aren’t seriously going to stay in two rooms in one of the most romantic places in the whole world, are you?”

“I don’t know him that well, and his best friend just died, so yes. I’ll give you all the information in case he turns out to be a trafficker.”

“He’s not a trafficker. He would have done that already if he wanted to. He had the perfect opportunity on Halloween to whisk you away when your phone and wallet were inside, but instead, he was the perfect gentleman and even gave you his phone. I personally think he’s a time traveler or from another dimension or something. No man is that nice. And then he calls you almost every day he can.”

I laugh. “He’s not a time traveler.”

“How would you know? Have you ever met a time traveler?”

“Have you? Maybe he’s just Swedish, and then I’ll meet other Swedish men, and they’re all like this,” I suggest.

“Maybe I need to move there. But it’s cold and dark. I don’t think I could handle that.”

Scarlett and I had looked up Sweden together to find out more about the country since Sem and Ash, poor Ash, said they came from there. “And then there’s all that sunlight in the summer.”

“I’ll just have to make do with American men,” she laments.

“Let me know how things go at work. Do you think they’re going to get fired?”

“I doubt it. I’ve no evidence.”
