"Can I lodge some kind of complaint and get them back?"

"Once we are married, you can lodge a complaint."

"Why not now?"

"Because we didn't know they did that when we processed you the first time, and as you are not a member of the GC, you only had that window to tell us."

"But if we marry, I'll become a member of the GC?"

"It's complicated, but you'll be able to file a complaint."

"Will that help me retrieve my eggs?"

"If you want to try."

"If I want to try? Of course, I want to try. Someone took those from me, and I can't live knowing a son or daughter of mine is living with aliens."

"I'm sorry for my insensitivity. Life in the galaxy is messy. I see so much that's so bad, Ivy. You were lucky to get out alive. As the doctor says, those eggs will probably have sadly died while being sold."

"But still, I want to make sure."

"We will try. Now that you have your memories back, will you agree to a marriage ceremony tomorrow?" Sem asks me as if the case of my stolen eggs has been closed.

Thirty-Three

Sem

I expect her to say, 'Yes,' but she doesn't say anything. Her lips are pressed together.

"Ivy?"

"I don't know if I want to marry a man who thinks nothing of my eggs being stolen or me being abducted."

"What are you talking about? Of course, I care."

"How could you give me this bracelet knowing I didn't know what it meant?" She suddenly asks me.

"At the time, I thought I might die and that I might never see you again. That's the most prized possession I own, and I gave it to you. Not to keep track of you but for you to have something of mine, just in case, even if you didn't know what it was."

"What do you mean to keep track of me? Oh my god. Is this a tracking device?"

"This is all going wrong."

"You bet it is."

"In the Empire, it's seen as romantic to know where your partner is all the time. I kept it on to prove our relationship to the Empire. I never thought in a million years it would be used as bait for you to be abducted again."

"But you knew there was a risk?"

"It was a very small risk."

"What were you thinking, Sem?"

"I was only thinking about us," I say honestly, trying to remember why I didn't think it would be an issue. "And at the time, there wasn't a threat. Taking humans who had been repatriated to Earth only became an issue after we had been to Greece, and then I was on the cusp of telling you the truth anyway."

"But you didn't."

"No, I didn't. And I should have. How many times can I say, 'I'm sorry?'"
