While Ivy is still in limbo, Caroline asked me to monitor her emails and communications. Of course, I shouldn't be doing this with Ivy, but I've already broken so many rules. This one is small.

Ivy is sitting across from me in my quarters as we go through her email and social media accounts to make sure nothing is amiss.

"I'll write back. You just tell me what you want to say."

"I couldn't type anyway. Look at that keyboard." She says, referring to the Alliance stroke keys.

"Once you learn it, it's fast."

"And will I have to?"

"Caroline did. But I guess it's up to you. Translators work too."

"I've never really learned another language, let alone an alien one."

I can't help but be a little annoyed with this. "I'm not really an alien. We share the same common ancestors." Then I take a deep breath then get back to the task. "What should I write?"

"Tell Scarlet that you and I would love to come to her barbeque, but we may be in Sweden. We haven’t booked return tickets yet."

"That's all?"

"Yes."

I nod and begin to type.

She watches my hand movements. "Why do you still use type and not just your voice?"

"Because you think differently when you type or write as opposed to speaking. This is something humanity has only just to begin to discover with your level of technology," I tell her and try not to be condescending.

"Our level of technology?"

"Yes, don't take it personally. Humanity started further behind almost everyone else in the galaxy."

"How far behind?"

I ignore her question and ask my own, "Can I send this now?"

She reads it and nods. "Yes. Send it."

There isn't really anything else in her email that needs to be responded to. I close the 3D computer between us.

"Wait. Turn on your computer again. Can you check if my eggs were recovered at GC HQ from the ship?"

"I already checked. They weren't. Most likely, they were taken to Gala Station when the Dulu bought their ship back.”

Ivy is silent for a minute and closes her eyes. I feel like the stillness lasts forever while I wait. Finally, she opens her eyes and says, "I want to take the drugs Caroline offered me so I feel less embarrassed."

I hope my face doesn't show my disappointment. I remind myself she's not Alliance, and I know humans find public sex distasteful. And Ivy is shy, even for a human. "I understand," I tell her softly. It's not really how I imagined my future wife agreeing to a marriage ceremony, but what can I do? This is partly my fault as well. "I'll make it as pleasurable as possible."

"That's not my concern. It's other people watching me be pleasured by you. Sex should be private."

"I've already explained the meaning behind the ritual. I'll let Caroline know, and we'll have as few people as possible in attendance. But one of the junior priestesses has to witness from the Capital Planet."

"Why? And how is that possible?"

"Because we've broken a lot of laws. She can witness it in real-time with RVM, which is carried on gravitational waves."
