Page 60 of Dare You to Ruin Me

My amused smile fades as Aleksandr checks his watch and says, "I should probably get going soon."

I frown, immediately concerned. "He's monitoring when you come and go now?"

I stare at my brother in surprise as he laughs and says he hasn't had a curfew in weeks. This revelation shocks me, given how controlling our father has always been.

"What? How is that possible?" I ask incredulously. "I don't understand. What exactly did you say to him to convince him so easily?"

Aleksandr grins, clearly enjoying having this knowledge that I don't. "I laid it on thick too. Told him if he wants me to rule the Bratva competently, he should stay out of my way."

My eyes widen in disbelief. I can't imagine our father taking that kind of talk from anyone. The great Bratva being levelled by his sons.

"You actually said that to him directly? And he accepted it, just like that?"

"I mean he grumbled a bit, but yeah, he backed off surprisingly easy," Aleksandr says with a casual shrug. "He barely acknowledges me these days and that's just the way I like it."

I smile slowly, feeling a swell of pride for my little brother. He's clearly grown much bolder and mature than I realized. The shy, meek boy is gone.

"Well look at you, all full of surprises," I say approvingly. "I have to say, I'm impressed Aleksandr. And a little jealous I never had the nerve to defy him so early."

Aleksandr grins. "What can I say, I learned from the best." He nudges me playfully.

We share a laugh. I drape my arm across Aleksandr' shoulders, marveling at how he's shot up in height.

"I love this new side of you, little brother. You're becoming a force to be reckoned with, that much is clear."

Aleksandr beams, soaking up my praise.

"Thanks, Dimitri. That means a lot coming from you."

I give him an approving pat on the back. "I always knew you had it in you. I'm glad you're finally embracing it."

“I gotta go man. Let’s keep in touch?”

“Of course.” I follow him out with my eyes. Even his gait now has a don’t-mess-with-me message in every step.

Sara returns and slips her hand into mine, giving it a gentle, reassuring squeeze. I glance over at her, taking in the understanding and empathy in her eyes. She doesn't say anything, just continues holding my hand.

Though the sounds of laughter and music from the graduation party still float through the lobby doors, my mood has soured after saying goodbye to my brother.

Sara seems to sense this, her grey eyes filled with understanding as they meet mine. She steps closer, reaching up to brush her fingers along my jaw.

"Let's go upstairs," she murmurs.

I raise an eyebrow in surprise. "But the party's still going on. Don't you want to stay longer?"

Sara shakes her head, a playful gleam entering her eyes. "I'd rather have you all to myself right now."

A smile tugs at my lips as I realize her intent. She's trying to distract me from my gloomy thoughts about Aleksandr. My wife knows me so well.

"Well, when you put it that way, I think slipping away sounds like an excellent idea."
