Her body convulses around me as she climaxes, her soft cries echoing off the walls. The feeling of her coming undone beneath me extends my own orgasm. I bury my face in the crook of her neck, muffling my cry against her skin.

Spent and panting, I collapse beside her. I pull her into my arms and replay the last few moments.

It's a sight to behold - Paige in the throes of pleasure. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful, more captivating. Even as my body twitches in the aftermath of the orgasm, I’m already thinking about the next time I get to be with her.

“So much better in a bed,” she laughs.

“I don’t know. I kind of liked the rugged outdoors. The stars above us.”

“And the bugs biting my ass beneath us.”

I laugh and roll away from her. “Let’s get in the other bed. This one is wet.”

“Didn’t you order dinner?” she asks.

“Crap. I did. Let me see if they left it at the door.”

Sure enough, two bags from a local burger joint were sitting outside the door. “Fries are going to be cold,” I said and put the bags on the table.

She’s wrapped up in the hotel robe, looking very casual and relaxed.

“I don’t care,” she says. “I’ll eat them cold.”

We start scarfing down our meals, stuffing our faces with cold, limp fries and warm cheeseburgers. While we’re eating, I know I need to broach the topic that's been weighing on my mind since we escaped the island. On the flight back to Portland, I thought about it even more.

"We need to really look at this situation," I say.

She looks at me with confusion. "What do you mean?" she asks.

I hesitate, knowing that what I'm about to say will only add to her anxiety. But she needs to know the truth, no matter how difficult it may be to hear.

"I think it's sabotage," I say, my words coming out in a rush. "Someone was trying to kill you."

Her eyes widen in shock, and for a moment, she's speechless. "Sabotage? The plane?”

I nod slowly. “It’s a possibility.”

“But who would want to kill me?"

I reach out and take her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. "That's what we need to figure out," I tell her, my voice firm. "Who knew what flight you were going to be on? Who knew what hotel you were in?"

Her brow furrows as she considers my words, realization dawning in her eyes. "My firm," she whispers, her voice barely audible. "It has to be someone from my firm. My boss made the arrangements. Well, not him, but his assistant."

"We need to learn a little more about that case and the whistleblower," I tell her, my voice serious.

"You're right," she nods. “Whatever dirt the whistleblower has must be big.”

“I think I just got you more excited for the case instead of scaring you away from it,” I say with a sigh.

She grins. “No one tries to kill me twice and gets away with it.”

Chapter 15

Paige

Despite my best intentions, I woke up after noon. I could have slept another twelve hours if I didn’t have to try and reclaim my life. I woke to the sound of the shower running and the other half of the bed empty. I was beginning to think Travis never slept.

I lie in bed, processing everything that had happened and what Travis said the night before. Did someone really try to kill me? It seemed a little extreme, but so did kidnapping. I didn’t even know the details of the case the whistleblower was trying to get me to take on for him. The thought that I might be the target of some psychopath is enough to send shivers down my spine. I can't help but feel a creeping sense of fear gnawing at the edges of my mind. I don’t like the idea of someone just waiting to get to me a third time. I knew the saying. The third time was a charm.
