Before he could respond, Doc came back with a bandage. If he sensed the tension in the air, he never let on. He simply wrapped her ankle then helped her off the table.

“You can take some anti-inflammatory painkillers to help ease the ache.”

“I know herbs,” she assured him. “Do you know where I can find willow bark?”

“Probably down the street at the apothecary,” he replied. “Savannah has a large collection of medicinal herbs, but for now, ibuprofen should help.”

“Thank you,” she said sincerely. “Helping me out, well, this means everything.”

The doctor smiled at her and helped her to the door. Brinnah glanced behind her and saw the confusion on Everett’s face as he trailed after them. He didn’t say anything during the short ride to the diner, and he didn’t linger, dropping her off and then immediately driving away.

Brinnah stared after him, far sadder than she should have been. They’d just met. Knew nothing about each other. Yet something deep inside her soul told her they could’ve been something great. Taking a deep breath, she pushed him out of her mind. She was in Sheridan for a purpose. To break the link with Vadin. Nothing was more important than that.

Chapter Three

How could she be someone else’s mate?

Everett was positive she was his moon-fated mate, so it made absolutely no sense. What did she mean by trying to break the bond? Was such a thing even possible? He needed some answers, so he did a U-turn and headed back toward town, driving straight to Jericho’s office. The alpha owned a successful construction company and had projects all over the county. He had disappeared for years after being poisoned by the devious man who schemed to take over the pack. He not only poisoned Jericho, but also killed his father.

Everett parked on the side street and walked into the office, the little bell over the door jingling when it opened. Jericho’s admin assistant, Zenia, smiled at him. Her glasses took over her face, obscuring her delicate features. He’d gone to school with her and her soft-spoken nature made kids tease her unmercifully. For the past few years, however, she’d been looking ill, with a sallow complexion and haunted eyes. Wolves were supposed to be fierce warriors, but she looked fragile. He might even say haunted.

“Hey, Everett,” she greeted.

“Hello there. Is the big man in?”

“Yep,” she replied. “You can go on back.”

“Thanks, Zenia.”

He headed to Jericho’s office and knocked on the open door. The alpha looked up and smiled.

“Hope I’m not interrupting,” Everett said.

“Nah. Just tedious paperwork, so I’m glad for the distraction. Come on in.”

Everett entered and sat down on the chair in front of the desk.

“How can I help you?” Jericho asked.

“I found a woman in the woods.”

Jericho blinked. “Alive or dead?”

“Alive. Sprained her ankle running from that damn rabid cat.”

“It’s been killed?”

“Yes. Jake is dealing with the carcass.” Everett hesitated for a moment, gathering his thoughts. “When I picked Brinnah up—uh, that’s her name, Brinnah—anyway, this amazing smell came to me. Delicious and warm. Spicy, like cinnamon, and it made me think of home. I thought she had to be my mate.”

“But?”

“She said she already has a mate. Said she’s here trying to find a way to break the bond. Apparently, this mate is a mean bastard.”

Jericho leaned back in his chair. “Break a bond? I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

“Have you ever heard of someone finding their mate, who was mated to another man?”

“Never,” the alpha said thoughtfully. “Where is she now?”
