“Were you with him, Corvo?” he asks in a low, threatening tone.

“Did you sort things with Sofia?” I ask, and he instantly releases me and begins pacing the room.

“My head is fucked,” he spits. “Why can’t I just walk away?”

“It’ll get easier.”

He shakes his head. “No, no, it won’t. I’m not giving up on you. You’re coming to look at the apartment I got for us. Once you see it, you’ll realise I’m serious.” He grips my wrist and pulls me from the room.

I try to tug away, but his grip is too strong, “No.” He ignores me, pulling me behind him as we descend the stairs. He’s acting crazy, and for the first time, I’m scared. “Vinn, stop!”

Riggs comes out of his office, followed by Mac. “Everything okay?” he asks.

“I’m taking Raven. I’ll return her soon.”

“I’m not a piece of property. Let me go,” I snap.

“Vinn, she’s upset,” says Riggs, trying to make him see reason.

“She’ll be fine. I just need to show her the apartment.” Seeing Vinn so unravelled is scary.

“Man, she doesn’t wanna go with you,” says Mac firmly. “Let her go.”

“Stay the fuck out of this!” yells Vinn.

“You’re scaring her, let her go!” Mac growls.

“Maybe you need to go into the office, and I’ll sort this out,” Riggs says to Mac.

“No. Let her fucking go now,” Mac yells, pulling his gun.

The room falls silent as Vinn turns slowly to look at Mac. “Have you got something to tell me, Corvo?” he asks me.

“I was with her last night,” says Mac. “But that’s got nothing to do with you because you’ve made your choice. Now, let her go.”

Riggs moves in front of the gun. “We all need to calm down. Mac, are you claiming Raven?”

“No, but he ain’t taking her.”

“Brother, you know you can’t enforce that, and I can’t either, not unless she’s an ol’ lady. She and Vinn have been hooking up for weeks. I can’t intervene.”

Everyone’s looking at Mac, including me, unable to believe Riggs has put him in that position. He stares into my eyes, steels his spine, and says, “Then I’m claiming her.”

I gasp, my throat suddenly feeling too tight, then all hell breaks loose. Vinn releases me and rushes Mac. They end up in a scuffle, with other brothers wading in to pull them apart. Gia grabs my hand and pulls me out the way. “Let them deal with it,” she whispers and takes me into the kitchen. We’re immediately joined by Anna and Leia.

“Well, that was unexpected,” says Anna.

I’m staring at the now closed kitchen door. “What just happened?”

“You just got yourself an old man,” says Leia.

“But he’s not looking for . . . he isn’t . . . I’m not . . .”

“I’ve never known it to happen like that before,” says Leia. “He clearly doesn’t want Vinn to have you.”

“But what do you want?” asks Gia, rubbing my hand.

“I don’t want all this,” I mutter. “And I want what you all have, but not because he feels obliged.”
