I smile sadly. “It’s fine.”

“It’s not fine. Stop saying it’s fine.” He scrubs his hands over his face. “You deserve so much better.” He pushes a hand into my hair and stares at me for a few seconds. I can see the internal battle he’s having with himself. He roughly runs his thumb over my lips, like he’s brushing away any trace of Vinn. “Why can’t you see it?”

I feel like he’s moving in slow motion as he edges closer. I stare into his dark eyes, and as he presses his lips against mine, I suck in a surprised breath. I saw it coming, but at the same time, I wasn’t expecting it. He cups my jaw with gentle hands and tilts my head as he sweeps his tongue into my mouth. His body flanks my own as he takes control, and I feel safe to relax while he explores my mouth. When he eventually pulls away, he keeps my head in his hands and stares into my eyes.

“That’s how you should be kissed. Every time. If a man doesn’t kiss you like that, he isn’t right for you.” He turns on his heel and heads out of the club, leaving me open-mouthed and staring after him.

“What the hell was that?” asks Eva in a dreamy voice.

I blink a few times, still staring at the door he just exited through. “Huh?”

“That was hot as fuck,” says Anna. I nod, unable to find my words.

“She’s gone into shock,” Leia says, laughing.

I slowly turn to face the women, who all look wistful, like they were the ones just swept off their feet. “He just kissed me,” I mutter.

“He really just kissed you,” says Leia.

Anna leans forward. “Was that an ‘I’m a great friend’ kiss, an ‘I like you’ kiss, or just a kiss?”

Leia grabs my hand and pulls me to sit with them. “That was a hot as fuck, ‘I want to love you forever’ kinda kiss.”

I shake my head. “No. He doesn’t like me like that. He’s a friend. That kiss was a ‘let me show you how a man should be kissing you’ kiss.”

“That’s not even a thing,” Leia says.

“Did Vinn ever kiss you like that?” asks Anna.

I shake my head. “He kissed me once. Right at the end of our agreement.”

“Agreement?” Eva repeats.

“They were just hooking up,” explains Leia. “When Raven wanted to call it quits, he kissed her in a last-ditch attempt to keep her.”

“But not like that,” I say dreamily. “I don’t think I’ve ever been kissed like that. Not outside the bedroom, anyway.” I steel myself. I’m getting carried away, seeing things in a kiss that aren’t there. Mac’s clearly mending a broken heart. He doesn’t need me latching onto him after everything he’s done for me. “Anyway,” I add, determined to change the subject, “I’m taking a break from working for Vinn. So, if any of you have shifts you want covering at any of the club’s bars, let me know, I’ll do anything.”

A high-pitched laugh comes from the other side of the room, and I look up to where some of the club girls are hanging out. Leia rolls her eyes. “There’s a new girl amongst the pack,” she says. The Kings don’t have many club girls these days, not now a lot of brothers are settled down, but the usual three are knocking back shots of tequila in the corner. There’s a girl with her back to me. “Her name’s Kiera.”

“She seems nice,” Anna adds.

The club girl turns, and I recognise her from one of the clubs I hung out with years ago, when I was a teenager. “I know her,” I say, standing. We were good friends back then, but when I moved on, she stayed. “Kiera,” I say, and her eyes widen.

“Oh my god, Raven.” We hug tightly.

“It’s been years. How the hell are you?”

She shrugs. “Yah know how it is. I like it here, though. Everyone’s lovely.”

I nod, taking a seat on a nearby couch, and she joins me. “Yeah, everyone’s really nice here. How did you end up here?” She was always adamant she’d marry a biker and become someone’s ol’ lady.

“I tried to settle down,” she shrugs, “but it never worked out. What about you?” She plucks at Mac’s kutte, and I smile. I’d forgotten I was wearing it.

“It’s complicated. I’m not really an ol’ lady. The guy is helping me out of a tight situation.”

“Oh. Tell me it isn’t Brick or Mac and we can still be friends,” she jokes. At the mention of Mac’s name, I hold my breath. He isn’t mine, but the thought of him being with someone else pisses me off. “Oh god,” she gasps. “Is it one of them?”

“Mac,” I say, shrugging, “but like I said, we’re not really a thing, so he’s free.”
