“Oh, thank god,” she says, placing her manicured red nails to her chest. “Because I am determined to have a piece of that!” I laugh a little too forcefully and smile awkwardly. I remember the men loving her. She was always easy going and she’s gorgeous, not tired-looking or desperate. She always looked after herself, and seeing her now, she still does.

“Go for it,” I say. “He’s a great guy.”

“Are you sure, cos I don’t wanna step on anyone’s toes.”

“No . . . absolutely . . . he’s free as a bird.”

She nods. “Well, great. Thanks. I’ll catch up with you later. I’m getting to know the other girls.” I nod, watching her re-join them, then I head back to where the ol ‘ladies are sitting.

“How do you know her?” asks Leia.

“When I was younger, we got talking. She’s really nice. The guys will love her.”

“Brick certainly does,” says Leia, nodding towards where Brick is staring over at the club girls.

“I think she has her sights set on Mac too,” I say with a bright, fake smile.

“Did you set her straight?” asks Anna.

“No. There’s nothing to set straight. He’s free.”

“Raven,” gasps Eva.

“Yah know, I think he’s trying to repair a broken heart. I feel for him. He’s really nice and he deserves to be happy. Kiera might just be the person who’s here to do that. I’m not gonna stand in the way of that.”

“She’s a club girl, they don’t end up being ol’ ladies,” explains Leia.

“Not strictly true,” I say. “I’ve known club girls who have fallen in love and made it. Let’s not write her off before she’s been given a chance.”

MAC

“I kissed her. I fucking kissed her. Why the fuck did I do that? It’s her damn past. The way her eyes go all sad and shit. Fuck!” I’m pacing as Ace watches me through amused eyes. “This isn’t funny!”

“Hey, I’m not laughing. I just can’t believe you’ve been here a couple of weeks and you’re already in the shit.”

“It was just a kiss. It doesn’t mean anything, right?”

“Depends what kind of woman Raven is.”

“She’s independent, a free spirit. She’ll definitely not read anything into it.”

He grins, resting back against the wall of the clubhouse. “Then why do you look so worried?”

The door opens and Brick steps out, holding a full bottle of whiskey. He slides down the wall, joining Ace. “Why are you out here?” he asks.

“Mac is in crisis mode.”

“I am not!” I snap.

“Not surprising after that statement in there, kissing Raven like that.”

Ace laughs. “You made a statement.”

“It was just a fucking kiss. Everyone needs to calm the fuck down.” My outburst makes Ace laugh harder. I roll my eyes and snatch the bottle from Brick. “I’ll talk to her.”

“What will you say?” asks Ace, chuckling.

“I’ll say you dickheads are winding me up and telling me she’ll think it means shit that it doesn't.”
