I smiled into the darkness. He sounded weary but not defeated. “Go back to sleep. It’s late.”

His arms tightened around my waist. “Don’t move. Stay here with me, Kylie.”

He was exhausted.

I was tired.

I saw no reason not to stay exactly where I was at the moment.

His breathing became deeper and slower as he finally slept.

I fell asleep moments later, lulled into slumber by the calming, reassuring, and steady beat of his heart.
