CHAPTER 30

Kylie

“This is the most relaxing day I’ve had in a long time,” Macy said as she took a long sip of her champagne.

“I love it,” Nicole said with a sigh. “The best hen party day ever.”

We couldn’t exactly call this a simple party since we’d been celebrating together since morning in several different locations.

I smiled as I looked out at sunset over London from our pod on the London Eye, an experience I’d intentionally skipped with Dylan since we’d made plans to do this for Nic’s bachelorette party day.

We’d spent the better part of the morning and afternoon at the spa before we’d moved on to an incredible high tea with plenty of scones, Nic’s favorite.

Finally, we’d traveled here to the London Eye to take a private, thirty-minute champagne ride on the giant Ferris wheel. We’d intentionally picked the last ride of the night.

The pod was large, so we had plenty of space all to ourselves.

“I wonder what kind of stag party the guys had today?” I contemplated out loud. “Dylan isn’t much of a drinker anymore.”

Just like us, Damian had opted to keep his bachelor party to just his two brothers rather than make it a big party.

“I doubt it involves a bar,” Nic pondered. “Not really Damian’s thing, and Leo isn’t a heavy drinker, either. Food would be my bet.”

“I really hate to see the day end,” Macy said in a wistful tone. “We won’t have days like this together very often anymore.”

“We’ll just have to do a video conference date every week,” Nic said adamantly. “I’m getting married, not going to prison.”

Macy snorted. “Aren’t those two things slightly similar,” she joked.

“Not this marriage,” Nic replied. “I’ll be starting a new job as a corporate attorney once I get back from my honeymoon. It sounds like a challenge, so I’m looking forward to it.”

“I’m happy for you,” Macy said genuinely. “You’re going to have a great life with Damian. I just don’t think marriage is ever going to be for me.”

“Never say never,” Nic warned as she poured herself more champagne. “I thought the same thing at one time.”

Macy shook her head. “My hours are crazy, and then I have the shelter volunteering, too. But I do like animals better than men most of the time.”

I chuckled. “I can’t even say that they won’t keep you warm in bed every night because they can.”

Macy beamed. “I can’t recommend using a tiger or a bear for that job, but dogs and cats work perfectly fine.”

“Okay, you two cynical single women,” Nic said with a laugh. “There are a few things those animals can’t provide, hot, sweaty sex being the first thing that comes to mind.”

“Vibrator,” Macy said. “When I’m not too exhausted to bother.”

I snickered. “Which is almost always, I’m sure. Your schedule is insane.”

“I don’t mind,” she answered. “I’m finally doing something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember.”

Maybe she didn’t mind her hours, but her face was showing signs of stress. Macy’s education to become a vet and then to pursue exotic vet status had been long and arduous for her. She was desperately in need of a break.

“I saw you talking to Leo at the wedding party dinner last night,” Nic said. “You two probably have a lot in common.”

Macy had gotten into London the night before last, and she’d finally met the rest of the family at the casual dinner at Hollingsworth House last night.

Macy’s face lit up. “He’s amazing,” she said earnestly. “I’ve been a fan of his work for years. I wish I had time to get to his sanctuary and breeding center here. It’s one thing to provide a home for exotic animals who can’t live out their lives in the wild, but it’s a delicate process to try to breed in captivity to preserve a species, so they don’t go extinct. He’s done some extraordinary things just to locate extremely rare species for his breeding program. Some pretty dangerous things, too. Those animals aren’t always found in friendly territory or in an area where they care about conservation.”

“He’s starting another sanctuary and breeding program in the US,” Nic said.
