Nightmares & Blue Eyes

-Spade-

“Strong hands hold me under the warm, soapy water. I flail under his hold, sucking in the harsh liquid as I try to fight him off me, but he’s too strong, and I’m too little. Where’s mi madre? I scream for her over and over again, sucking more water into my lungs. I can’t breathe. Help me, someone, anyone, help me. Don’t let me die like this!”

I gasp awake, breathing heavily, trying to take a deep breath but I can’t. That nightmare felt too real; I’m drenched in sweat, my t-shirt is soaked, and my bed is wet. Did someone come in here and pour water on me? I get out of bed and peel the shirt from my back. I pick up my phone from the nightstand and see that it’s eight p.m. Ri isn’t here; one can only assume he’s with the she-devil Marsela. I can’t fucking stand that Bruja. I walk into the bathroom and start the shower, letting it warm up while I change my bed sheets. I glance at my phone again, pick it up, then put it down. Fuck. Stop this, Reid. Stop checking in on her. Jay gave me the tracking app, so I know where Jade is every second of the day. Fuck it. I can’t help myself. Picking the phone back up, I open the app to track her ass, and see she’s at her house, precisely in the kitchen. I miss her, but I still want to strangle the life out of her. I toss the phone on the nightstand, remove the soaked sheets from my bed, and throw them into the hamper. Grabbing another set, I put them on my queen-size bed and sit down, picking up the phone again to check her location. She’s still at the house, only in her room this time. I should ask Jay for a live feed to the cameras in her bedroom and bathroom. Yes, I know it’s an invasion of privacy, but I don’t give a fuck. Thoughts of last night in the church have been haunting me ever since. I almost forgot what it felt like for my heart to skip a beat in my chest. When Jade kissed me, it made me feel alive again, and my whole world shifted back into place. It was like heaven and hell fusing together that ignited a fire between us, and I would gladly burn there with her, but only her, because you can’t defeat the demon you enjoy toying with. Growling, I get up, toss the phone on the bed, and strip out of my sweats and boxers. I step into the shower and let the hot water stream over the scars on my back. Turning the water up, I revel in the pain, and let it burn my skin, reopening the wounds that never really closed. She is the only one who can close them, and I’m not sure I want her to just yet. I’m not sure what I want anymore. I do know that I regret saying that shit about her mother. I took it too far, but I was hurt. Her mother is a trigger and I’m not above using it to get the real Jade to come back. A part of me thinks it’s a little too late. That my Jade died over a month ago. This person she is now, is truly the demon from hell. Taking a deep breath, I do my thing and get out, grabbing a towel and wrapping it around my waist. I hear my phone ringing, but I let it go to voicemail. I don’t want to talk to anyone, but it rings again. I walk over to the bed, grab it, and answer.

“Yea?”

“Shipment is coming in tonight at ten.”

“Where?”

“County road 75 and mile marker twenty-two. It won’t be heavily guarded. Two men are driving, and two are in the unit with the cows.”

“Roger that; I’ll let you know when it’s finished.”

“Stay safe, Reid.”

“Will do, hermano.”

I pull up the text thread with O and the gang.?

Me: We have a job. Meet me on the outskirts of the Academy at 9:30, suit up, and bring the masks.?

Ophelia: Anything else?

Stone: Bikes or cars?

Asher: Grenades & Flashbangs?

Bianca: You are lucky I love you Spade because you are interrupting my night.

Spade: B, dick comes and goes. You wanna make money or what?

Bikes, flashbangs, silencers and zip-ties. The shipment isn’t heavily armed—two in the cab, two in the back with the cows.?

Ophelia: You got it, Boss, see ya soon.

Stone: I’m heading to the warehouse now, I had to drop Cade off.

Asher: Got you, bro.

Bianca: Fine. You win.?

I rummage through my closet for my all-black tactical gear and riddle my body with weapons from guns to knives, tranqs, and some syringes of Acid Dreams. I head out of the Academy doors and into the cold, bitter December night. The wind whips against my face with a bite. I walk over to the parking garage and hop on my bike, leaving the grounds and hauling ass to the meet-up spot. O is the first one there, as usual. I swear punctuality is her thing, but having the most powerful judge as a father will rub off on a girl. The others aren’t far behind. Once everyone arrives, I give them the usual pep talk.

“Alright, let’s make this quick and clean. When we approach, roll the flash-bangs. We will secure the gunmen, and Gio will take care of the rest. Then, I’ll call The Brotherhood in Amish Land to pick up the shipment. Payment will be wired once everything is complete and safe.” They all nod in unison, but it’s Ophelia who approaches.

“Where’s Jade?” She asks.

“Home,” is all I reply with.?

“Bullshit, she wouldn’t miss an opportunity like this to stay home and eat bonbons.” O laughs.

“Just leave it alone; I’ll explain later,” I say through gritted teeth.
