“Ooo, don’t we have our panties in a twist tonight? Come on, where’s your sense of adventure? Why not make the most of this opportunity and have a little fun.”

He leans forward, preparing to place a kiss on my lips, when I see Carter reach out and grab the back of his shirt. He spins Rusty around and Carter’s fist collides with Rusty’s mouth, sending him to the ground. People turn around to check out the commotion, creating a circle around us.

“If you ever come near either of us again, I’ll fucking kill you,” Carter warns.

With Rusty on the floor nursing a bloodied and swollen lip, Carter grabs a hold of my hand and ushers me away.

“You want to get out of here?” he asks.

“I’d love to get out of here,” I reply.

“I know this nice little restaurant about two blocks away. They make great pizza.”

“I could totally go for a pepperoni right now.”

He smiles, then hand-in-hand, we exit the building, walk across the road and head toward the restaurant. When we get inside, we find a booth by one of the windows, take a seat and one of the waitresses comes over to us. She places the menu on the table and we order some drinks and our pizzas.

“Can you believe the nerve of that guy?” I ask.

“Sadly, I can. I should have seen the signs. I guess I was just blind and so in love with the guy that I didn’t see it.”

“I’m sorry,” I say.

“What on earth are you sorry about?”

“Because I’m the reason Rusty cheated on you.”

“Well, I’m also the reason Rusty cheated on you, so I guess we’re even.”

“Don’t you want to punch or throw something at me?” I ask.

“And ruin that beautiful face of yours? Not a chance. Besides, if it hadn’t been for Rusty, the two of us would never have met, or be sitting here in this restaurant.”

The waitress returns with our drinks, and she places them down on the table in front of us.

“Thank you,” I tell her, as Carter gives her a smile.

“Shall we toast?” he asks, raising his glass.

“To us, and new beginnings,” I say.

“To us,” he replies, clinking our glasses together.

We take a sip of our drinks, just as the waitress returns with two pizzas. She places them both in the center of the table and I reach for a slice of pepperoni, while Carter takes a piece of his New Yorker. As I bring the pizza slice to my mouth, Carter angles his head up at me and gives me a smile. How the hell did we both get so God damn lucky? I guess this is what fate must have had in store for both of us, that we were supposed to find each other and come here to this very restaurant, to enjoy our first ever meal together. Life is full of roadblocks, and you have to find a way through to the other side, and sometimes it’s not as easy as a straight road ahead. It’s amazing how, on a rainy night, I came into this man’s sight, standing by the road with not even an umbrella or a coat to protect me. And when I thought I was in love with another man, I came to realize that what he couldn’t give me, was the one little thing that Carter can.
