“Maybe. Is that a problem?”

“No, no problem, but as they say, relationships based on intense circumstances never work out.”

“They say that?” I inquire.

“I don’t know. I may have heard it somewhere.”

“The statement seems kind of redundant though, don’t you think?” I ask.

“Oh, how so?”

“Well, I wouldn’t exactly call this an intense circumstance, and then there’s the obvious fact that we’re not dating, so therefore there is no relationship status.”

His mouth curves into a smile, revealing his perfectly shaped bright white teeth. I have to say that I never imagined I’d find myself in this kind of situation. I’ve only been single for less than twelve hours, and out of the blue, I’ve met this mysterious and gorgeous stranger that rescued the poor damsel in distress who was stranded on the side of the road in the pouring rain trying to change a flat tire. Okay, so I may be no damsel, but I guess you can say I was in need of rescuing. I can’t help but stare into his piercing eyes and be mesmerized by them. However, at the same time, it’s kinda awkward just lying here, barely saying more than a few words to each other, and yet I can’t think of anything stimulating to talk about.

“You know what’s funny?” he asks.

“This is one of those situations where two perfect strangers are alone in a room, trying not to make the moment awkward by thinking of things to talk about. And because they’re trying too hard, they end up making it awkward.”

“We are, aren’t we?”

He nods in agreement.

“So, Dylan, what is it exactly that you do?”

“I work in publishing. I’m an editor.”

“Oh, really? You mean like a magazine editor or something?”

“No. I edit for authors. They send me their manuscripts and I edit their novels.” He quirks his eyebrows and gives me a smile. “What?” I ask.

“It’s just funny cause I’m in publishing too. I’m a lawyer and do all the legal work for a major publishing house.”

Well, would you look at that. In just the blink of an eye, we’ve gone from having an awkward moment with almost nothing to talk about, to sharing a love for all things that are books. This conversation suddenly got very interesting, really quick. I must admit I am starting to feel extremely tired, but I can’t possibly go to sleep now, not when we’ve finally managed to find a topic of conversation we can chat about.

“So, what are you currently working on?” he asks.

“I’m not sure I’m allowed to disclose that information,” I reply.

“Seriously, who am I going to tell? I’m not asking you to tell me the name of the author or the title of the book. I’m just asking what it’s about.”

Now, I may be reading this totally wrong, but the way he’s looking at me right now is almost like he’s attempting to fuck me with his eyes. Or maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part. But the guy is making an attempt to have a conversation, so I guess I can give him something.

“It’s about a lawyer from New Jersey who is fooling around with this gorgeous, rich, blonde-haired beauty.”

“Sounds … interesting,” he says.

“Oh, it gets better. The lawyer is happily married, and when the affair starts to get out of hand, he calls it off. Well, he tries to, at least.”

“I believe that’s what they call cheating.”

“Yeah, so?” I respond.

“You see, this is what really bugs me about these romance novels.”

“What’s that?”

“If someone is happily married, as the author so puts it, why would they have an affair? I mean, it just doesn’t make any sense. A lot of readers are against cheating in books.”
