“But yet it’s okay for it to occur in movies?” I ask.

“I don’t know. Maybe. I guess people view those differently. I only know from reviews that I’ve read, that a lot of readers don’t like it in books. They literally give a book a bad review if there is the mere mention or the intent of cheating.”

“It’s called fiction. Plus, it creates drama and a great story. The two combined give you the ultimate best-seller.”

“And people actually get off on this stuff?” he asks.

“Believe it or not. Have you never read a romance novel?”

He scoffs and maneuvers himself so that his hands are now curled up under his head and resting on the pillow.

“Hundreds. Maybe even thousands. But I prefer my book boyfriends to be the alpha male who is dominant and takes charge of his relationship. I actually just finished this book by Ann Grech, who is an author from Australia. She has many alpha males and her books are ménage, and not with three guys. She takes things to the next level with usually two men and a woman, making for some seriously hot sex scenes. I’ve also read some books by N.R. Walker, another Australian author. Damn! That woman sure knows how to write about sex between two men. Lord have mercy.”

And here I was, not even two minutes ago, worrying that I couldn’t find anything stimulating to talk about with this guy. Well things have certainly escalated very quickly.

“Yeah, those Australians really know how to work up a treat with their sex stories, especially the women.”

“Hey, there are a lot of male authors out there too. One in particular who also writes some great gay romance.”

“There is?” I inquire.

“Yeah. I recently did some heavy promotional work for this series where the main protagonist was a former soap opera actor from Los Angeles. He pretty much had his life flushed down the toilet and was presented with an offer on a silver platter. He could travel the world to meet twelve random men to win some prize money. It was a play on The Bachelor meets The Bachelorette but a gay version. The author was a male, also from Australia.”

“That actually sounds quite interesting,” I say.

“It’s a very good series, and a great read. You should check it out, when you have the time.”

I give him a wide smile and my eyes travel the length of his body, never missing an inch of detail. He’s so perfectly put together, of course I have no idea what he’s hiding beneath that shirt of his, but from what I see so far … hot damn!

“Have you only ever done legal work for the publishing house? Like, have you ever worked on any real-life cases?”

“I practiced family law, then moved into criminal law until it started to take a major toll on my life and relationship. That’s when I decided that I needed a change of pace and moved into publishing. It’s much simpler, all I have to worry about is the nitty gritty stuff in contracts that the publishing house gets the authors to sign. And I also overlook all the copyright and plagiarism laws to make sure all parties have their asses covered.”

Hmm, speaking of asses, I’d sure like to know what his feels like.

“Sometimes I feel like being a lawyer is almost like being a doctor,” he continues.

“How so?” I ask.

“Well, people tell you their inner most secrets and you have to protect their privacy, you know?”

“So … you’re discreet?” I ask coyly.

“If I have to be, yes. What about you?”

“What about me?” I reply.

“Can you be discreet?”

“That depends what I have to be discreet about. I’m a terrible liar, so if you ever need someone to lie for you in court, don’t ask me.”

He chuckles.

This is good. We’re finally talking for longer than just a few seconds, and it’s about something that we both share a mutual interest in. I only hope I can keep the conversation going long enough so that neither of us falls asleep, even though it is rather late. I clear my throat and haul myself off the bed and wander over toward the sliding door. I pull open the drapes and slide the door open before stepping outside. It’s still pouring rain, and it’s freezing, but I just needed to get a breath of fresh air, even if it’s just for a minute, because things were starting to get a little too hot inside. I take a step forward and lean over the railing, we’re only on the first floor, so we’re not very high off the ground, and the hotel backs onto a park, so there are no houses or buildings around us.

“What the hell are you doing out here? It’s freezing.”

“I needed some air,” I say.
