“The Holiday Inn on Seventieth.” It’s a midrange hotel, one that I can afford on my own. “First, stop at a gas station. If he wants me, he’s going to have to come find me.”

Chapter 47

Damon

I’ve lost track of Misty as I push through the crowd, trying to get to her. The little minx is going to pay for that. But something in the way she looked at me let me know she wasn’t the only one in trouble. Unease settles in my bones at just what that could mean. Somehow, I’d pissed my wife off, and I can’t fucking have that. The things between us are too new, and she’d spent her entire life hiding herself. A rock settles in my stomach at the idea of her closing herself off to me again.

I need to get to her before she starts to spiral in her own head whatever lies she’s telling herself.

My fist clenches when Bash isn’t at our table. The man had one job, and he let her fucking go. He might be my younger brother, but I’m not above beating the shit out of him.

It only takes a second to spot him with Jax Ryder and the rest of Misty’s friends.

I eat up the distance between us, casting a shadow over the table, and smile at the way my brother’s face blanches at the sight of me.

I come up behind Jax, who’s thanking Bash for letting him borrow his jet. I ignore the fact that Bash doesn’t have a jet, which means he’s been lending out mine.

The entire table goes silent when I circle around and grip Bash’s shoulder. “What did you say to her to piss her off?”

My voice is full of warning to not fuck with me right now as I haul him out of his chair. I don’t need her friends overhearing us.

Once we’re out of earshot, I let him go, a low growl forming in my throat. “You were supposed to be watching her.”

He glares right back, but I don’t miss the minuscule step back he takes. “You shouldn’t have lied to her, asshole.”

Every muscle in my body freezes. “What did you tell her?”

“Everything.” He raises his chin in challenge, as if daring me to deny it.

He grunts, folding in on himself when my fist lands on his stomach. He takes a second to recover before grinning at me.“That girl was made for you.”

“I fucking know that.”

Xander steps up to us tentatively, careful not to get too close.

I point at him. “And you. You’re a fucking dead man.”

He tilts his head. “Shouldn’t you be finding your wife instead of threatening me?”

Fuck. Tension builds in my spine as I push past them. I’ll deal with their insolence later. A part of me can’t help but be proud that they’re sticking up for her, no matter how much it pisses me off.

I exit the building. There are several groups of people out front, chatting while they smoke. But there’s no hint of my pixie out here, no sign of where she’s gone.

A wicked smile pulls at the corner of my mouth. She has no idea how much I love the chase.

Run, little mouse. Then, I pull up her tracker.

Chapter 48

Misty

My Uber pulls up to the front of the hotel, and I pay him in cash. There’s something that feels entirely wrong with spending Damon’s money while running from him. Not that I think he’d care—hell, he’d probably encourage it. All the easier to track me. Not that he needs any help with that.

The lobby’s lights are dimmed, giving it a nighttime mood, with a fake fireplace on one side and an unattended laminated wood counter on the other.

There’s a little card that says, ring the bell for assistance. My fingers hesitate over it, everything in me screaming that no matter what the card says, it’s rude to ring this bell. What if they’re in the bathroom or something? There’s a large clock ticking away, and my heart beats faster with every shift of the long hand. Just this once.

I give the bell a light tap.
