Chapter 12

The warmth of the bourbon spread over him like warm rain, reminding him of how Neeky’s body sent a wave of heat through him earlier. He couldn’t believe that all these years he’d believed this girl belonged to his brother when Nino had no interest in women. Raising the bottle to his lips, he took a long draught and swallowed.

“Damn, I’m getting used to this shit!”

With his shirt open at the front, having just pushed his arms through the sleeves after his encounter with Neeky earlier, he stood up from his father’s office chair and picked up his jacket, still holding on to the bourbon with the other hand. Taking another sip, he left the office, oblivious to the fact that his gait was unsteady.

He stumbled down the passage, passed through the living room and was headed up the stairs when he heard a splash. The swimming pool located near the guest house was enclosed with a seven- foot fencing for privacy, so he could not see who was there through the double glass doors that overlooked the area. Retracing his steps, he headed to the doors, stubbing his toe on the coffee table in the process.

“Shit!” he cursed, holding tightly to the liquor while letting go off his jacket. “I almost lost my drink.”

Although his toe hurt like hell, he was too tipsy to focus on the pain. At the moment, his focus was on discovering the one who was audacious enough to be swimming at that ungodly hour. After fumbling what seemed like forever to Neo, he finally managed to pry the doors open and stepped onto the pavement. Cold bit into his feet and he looked down, only now realizing he’d lost his shoes somewhere.

Dragging another mouthful of liquor, he walked quite unsteadily along the path leading to the swimming pool, when he reached the enclosure, he pushed the gate and entered. Someone was taking laps, their dark skin glistened with water. Sitting at the edge of the pool, Neo continued to drink from the bottle until it was almost empty while watching Neeky take her laps. Finally, she surfaced, her eyes widening upon seeing him sitting there.

“You, over there,” he slurred. “I hated you. I really hated you.”

“Have you been drinking?” she asked.

Neo’s eyes drooped and his head began to lull. “I hated myself … hated…” his voice trailed off. “You know why?”

Neeky pulled herself out of the pool and tried to get Neo to stand up. “You’re drunk. You should go sleep it off.”

“I hated myself for wanting my brother’s girl all these years,” he continued to babble. “But you were never his girl. Why the fuck was I feeling guilty for? My brother didn’t like women and now he’s dead…dead. The fuck, he’s gone! Who the fuck took him from me?”

* * *

Neeky pulled him up to his feet but he could not stand on his own and he leaned on her. She wrapped her arms around his shoulder and tried to guide him inside, but he twisted around and they both lost their footing. She tried to break both their fall but they fell over the edge of the pool with a big splash. Being a drunken fool, Neo splash around the pool like an idiot thwarting Neeky’s attempt to fish him out. She was tempted to leave him there, but she empathized with him since he recently lost so much.

“Come on,” she urged, getting a grasped on his shirt, but he wrangled from it and let it flow on the water.

She grabbed his arm and pulled him up, then slipped her other arm around his chest and began paddling back to the edge of the pool. When they got there, Neo turned around to face her, grabbed her face and devoured her mouth. She bit down on his tongue eliciting a groan as he released her.

“You’re drunk. I don’t make out with drunkards,” she scolded him.

“Will you kiss me when I’m sober?” he slurred before his eyes slammed shut.

“Damn,” Neeky reached out and gripped his shoulders, wondering how the hell she was going to get him out of the pool now.

She pushed him up to the ledge and timely nudged him over it. He wasn’t completely unconscious so he assisted by raising his legs over. When he was out, she pulled her self up and retrieved her towel from the lounger a couple feet away, he was still lying on the concrete groaning and mumbling incoherently.

“Neo, come on. Let’s get you inside.”

“Kiss me,” he mumbled. “I love your lips.”

“No kiss, you need to get inside.”

After some coercion, he stood and she guided him inside. It was a tedious journey with him stumbling and ranting about kissing her. His declaration of his secret crush on her caused her heart to skip a few beats and her body to flush. This was not good. She had no intention of falling for anyone, let alone this boy. She came to Italy for one reason and that was avenge Nino’s death, not to fuck around.

She finally managed to get him to his room. Feeling on the wall near the door, she found the light switch and flipped it on. They tumbled to the bed where she put him to sit, while she pondered what to do. The task of removing his wet pants was not something she was looking forward to doing. This was when she knew she should have called for someone, but everyone was down for the night except for the night guards, seeing it was near two in the morning. She wasn’t acquainted with them enough to ask their help, so she gritted her teeth and pulled down his pants along with his boxers.

That was all the help she would offer, so she encouraged him to lie down and tucked him in. By the time she switched the light off, he was gently snoring. Neeky’s heart broke for him knowing he was in so much pain. All that crap about having a crush on her was just him trying to deal with his grief. He needed an outlet and that was the reason they started his training program. She hoped that he would deal with his grief in a productive way soon, otherwise it was going to eat him alive.
