Chapter 13

Three days later…

“Has the building been secured?” Neo asked.

Frankie, Joe, Marco, Brogad, Dragon and Neeky along with a few more co-captains were in this meeting in the office. They’d already planned their strategy, all was left was to confirm everything was in place.

The day after the funeral had been the worse day of his life with a pounding headache, every sound making him feel like his head was being split with an ax. The last two days were used to get over his first hangover and channel his anguish into his training. Today was a great day. The street team found a connection to Balthasar’s daughter – Eunice.

His question was in relation to a building across from Eunice’s where they could have a sharp shooter stationed in the event that things went awry when they ambushed her apartment. Eunice was forty years old, ten years old when her father and Neo’s parents had their last showdown. The question on everyone’s mind now was … was Balthasar still alive?

Frankie reassured him that everything was on track and that the team was ready to move out.

“Let’s go,” he instructed.

Today Neo was feeling like a DeLuca, or maybe a version of his father. He’d seen his father take charge many times, so it wasn’t hard channeling Adriano. Feeling confident about this mission, he took his father’s shoulder holster from its secured place in the top right drawer of the desk and strapped it on. But it was his mother’s Glock that he positioned in it.

As the group moved out, Neo hung back for a moment to make a silent promise to himself. Mom, I will find you and bring you home. As he left the office, he noticed that Neeky had lingered behind. They hadn’t spoken much since the incident at the pool. As he passed her, she grabbed onto his upper arm.

“You can do this.”

“Why are you being nice to me?” he demanded.

“What do you mean?”

He pulled her back into the office and closed the door. “Ever since you arrived, we’ve been at logger heads.”

“And whose fault is that?”

“I’m sorry. I was a little surprised to see you and with my brother gone, I took it out on you.”

“There you go,” she replied.

“That’s all you have to say?”

Her eyes narrowed. “What else is there. You apologized, so I will try not to be mean to you.”

“What about … you know… the kiss you promised?”

“Get over yourself Neo. I never prom…”

Cutting off her answer, he crushed her mouth with his. She struggled against him, but he pushed her up against the door with his body. When she opened her mouth to protest, he took advantage of it and took her tongue. She went still, and he was aware of what that meant and broke the kiss. A slap resounded on his cheek, but she didn’t push him away. He devoured her mouth once more and this time, she gripped the sides of his head as the kiss deepened.

“Neo!” someone called from outside the door causing them to break apart.

Bumping foreheads with her, he whispered in a thick voice. “We’ll finish this later.”

“No, you’ve had your kiss,” she replied, patting his cheek. “This is where it stops.”

He opened the door. “Not a chance. We’ll finish this later.”

Sharpshooter was positioned in the adjacent building, a clear view of the balcony and living room. The main team entering the apartment building from front and rear while the other teams scoured the surrounding areas, trying not to disturb neighbors. It was past one in the morning and the neighborhood was quiet, except for the barking of a dog in the distance.

Their entry into the building was unhindered, which was somewhat unexpected. Neo would have thought there would already be an encounter with guards. Each apartment unit was joined horizontally, therefore allowing for private entrance, exits and fire escapes. These points were secured, which meant that it would be difficult for those inside to escape. They entered through the back, passed through a passage and came into the foyer.

The layout for the building was that the ground floor was the garage, and utility areas, with a staircase leading up to the living quarters. They’d already checked the double carport and noted that only one vehicle was parked there.
