As it was, she needed to visit the lawyer’s office downtown and speak to Nathan about how she could find out what happened to her grandparents. Why had her one grandfather left? Where was he?

Her clothes were in the car. As she walked down the stairs, she remembered the third stair from the top always squeaked, so she skipped it. No sense in waking them and explaining why she was leaving.

As it was, she wanted to come back. But once they knew why she was here, would they associate with her? She liked Cal. She adored Nathan. And she wanted to continue what they’d started. But first, she had to learn the truth. Besides the wedding, that was her whole objective for coming here this weekend.

When she opened the front door, she glanced upstairs one more time. What a fantastic night. A night she would never forget.

Hopefully, she’d be back soon.

With a sigh, she walked naked out the door. When she reached her car, she pulled her dress back on, started the engine, and backed out of the driveway.

But if they didn’t remain at least friends, she would talk to them about how her family had once owned the ranch, and she wanted it back. The Sweet B belonged to her family.

It took her about thirty minutes to reach her hotel. Once she went upstairs, she showered, checked her phone for messages, and prepared to start her search. The only problem was that it was Sunday.

So she spent the rest of the day on the computer researching the ranch, driving around town, and preparing for tomorrow.

The following day, she couldn’t wait to get started.

How would Nathan react when she went into his office? How would Cal react when he learned she was here to learn how her grandparents had lost the ranch and that she wanted her inheritance back?

Only time would tell, but until then, she would do what she came for. After some breakfast and coffee, she headed down to the courthouse to see what she could learn about the ranch.

Two hours later, all she’d found was that her grandfather signed the property over to Ronald Thomas. She didn’t know who the man was and couldn’t find out why her grandfather Paul Bradley had given the property to him. There had been no bill of sale, nothing except he’d signed over the deed. Why?

Tonight, she would call her grandmother and see what she could learn from her, but the woman’s lips were tighter than a seal on a submarine. Every time Lillian had asked, she’d told her to forget about the ranch. They would never live there again.

In some ways, Lillian wished she could. But they had been happy there. Sure, they had moments of happiness after they moved, but not like when they lived on the ranch. And she missed her grandfather Paul. He’d disappeared, and she’d never seen him again.

Today, she’d looked him up, but there was nothing but his signature on the deed to the ranch he’d given to Ronald Thomas – Cal’s grandfather.

Walking across the wooden sidewalks, she wondered why the town had never replaced them. When she entered Nathan’s office, the pretty girl behind the desk glanced up.

“Good afternoon,” she said.

“Is Nathan available?”

“Yes,” she said. “Let me call him. May I ask who is here to see him?”

“Tell him, Lillian. He’ll know me,” she said, the memory of what they’d done to one another the night before slamming into her.

Never in her life had she experienced such a night.

It took a couple of minutes, but he appeared at the door.

“Lillian,” he said, his voice breathless. “Katy, you can have the rest of the afternoon off.”

The woman frowned at him and then at Lillian, and then she smiled.

“Thanks, boss,” she said, gathering her belongings and going out the door.

Why had he let the woman go?

He took her by the arm. “We were so disappointed when we woke yesterday morning, and you were gone.”

“It was early,” she said, wishing she’d had some time alone to wander through the house. “I needed to get back to the hotel, and I had things to take care of.”

If she’d stayed, they would’ve had sex again. Even now, she could feel her panties dampening at the sight of the handsome man. The very thought of him and Cal together had her remembering what they’d done. And she wanted more.
