And while he loved Lillian’s family, could they accept the grandson of the man who had destroyed their lives?

For the fiftieth time, he stared at the paperwork in front of him and knew that today was not a good day to make any kind of legal decisions for any of his clients. His heart and soul were just not into his work today.

Normally, his work would clear his mind and he could push aside things that were bothering him, but not today.

The outside door opened and he heard his receptionist yelling. “Stop. You can’t just barge in there.”

“Watch me,” he heard Lillian say.

And then there she was, standing in front of his desk, big tears in her eyes.

“Damn it, this was not supposed to happen, but it did.” She pulled out the deed to the Sweet B Ranch. “I fell in love with you and Cal. When I wanted to learn the truth, I never thought about what would happen to the people living there. I never dreamed of being with two men. I never thought that anyone would ever convince me not to keep the place of my dreams.

“But I can’t live there without the two of you. You make me happy. And regardless of what we’ve gone through together, I want your happiness more than my own. So I’m signing the deed back over to Cal. If you want to be with me, come to dinner tonight. If not, I’ll be gone in the morning.”

Before he could respond, she whirled around and ran out of his office.

Son of a bitch. The woman just said she loved both of them.

He grabbed his phone and the deed and rushed out of the office. He had to find Cal. They had a woman who loved them, and they had a dinner to get to tonight, or she would be gone.

It took him three tries before he located his best friend holed up in a hotel room, drinking.

“Now I understand why my father did drugs,” Cal said. “It was to ease the pain.”

“No,” Nathan told him. “It was because he let the pain take over his life instead of fixing things. You’re not going to do that.”

Cal stared at him like he wanted to kick him out the door.

“Do you love Lillian?”

“Yes, that’s why it hurts so much. Not only did I love the woman, but the ranch as well,” he said.

Nathan pulled out the deed and handed it to Cal. He stared at it confused.

“What the hell? She’s giving me the ranch?” he glanced up and stared at Nathan confused. “I don’t understand. That’s what she’s wanted for so long.”

“I get it. The woman loves you and she wants you to be happy. She’s willing to sacrifice her own happiness so you’ll be happy.”

Stunned, Cal rose from the bed and began to pace the room.

“You think she loves me?”

“I think she loves us,” Nathan said, grinning. “And I’m thrilled. She came to my office and told me that she loves both of us and that she was signing the deed back over to you. If we love her, we’re to come to dinner tonight. Otherwise, she’ll be gone in the morning.”

A big smile filled Cal’s face. “You’re certain?”

“Yes,” he said. “Now what are we going to do about it?”

“Come on,” Cal said. “We’ve got to get to the jewelers before they close. We need to get flowers and a bottle of champagne. We’re getting engaged tonight to the woman we love.”

Nathan laughed. “You’re certain? You’re not just saying this to get the land back, are you?”

“No, I want Lillian. She’s one hell of a woman. A fighter. I’ve been sitting here drinking because I didn’t think she would want me after what my grandfather did.”

That was all Nathan needed to hear.

“Let’s go. We have a big night ahead of us,” Nathan said.
