Guess what? I put your name forward for this wild opportunity over in NYC. It’s with the biggest client our firm has ever snagged. They’re looking forward to working with you. Since you’ve wrapped up your other contracts, this would be your main gig.

I’ve got a good feeling about this one. Apart from the obvious opportunity of the role, I made sure they understood the importance of a decent schedule for you: Monday through Friday and off by five. No overnight trips. A fresh start for you and your boy in the Big Apple. And speaking of Jeremiah, the relocation package they’re offering? Top-tier. They’ve even got this great school lined up that’ll make sure he graduates without a hitch.

Hope that sparks some excitement in you. Let’s chat more about it when you’re free.

Catch you soon,

Mark

He leaned back in his chair and reread Mark’s email for the third time. The prospect of having everything taken care of—for him and Jeremiah—was tempting, to say the least. With him and Emma broken up, there was nothing keeping him here in Hadley Cove.

After he turned off his computer, he stood, stretched, and then walked into the living room.

“Hey, Jer, can you take a break for a minute?”

Jeremiah put his pen down. “Sure, what’s up?”

Luke took a seat on the sofa and told Jeremiah about the email he’d received with all the details of the job offer. Once he finished, he looked over at Jeremiah. “So, what do you think, Jer?”

Jeremiah waited a few moments before replying. “It sounds like it could be good, and I do kinda miss the big city. It would be nice to have a fresh start again, but Hadley Cove is growing on me.”

“So, is that a yes from you?” Luke asked. “I promise things will be different this time.”

Jeremiah sighed as he stood, picking up his study guide. “I don’t know. You’ve made promises like that before.”

Luke nodded. “You’ve got me there. I want to show you things have changed. We still have some time to think about it. Didn’t mean to interrupt. Goodnight, son.”

“Goodnight.”

Lying in bed with heavy eyes, he mentally tallied the pros and cons of the offer, weighing each carefully. Although his thoughts were focused on mending the relationship with his son, he couldn’t help but think about the eight hundred miles that would separate him from the woman he still loved.

Emma

I can do this.

Today was the day Emma would do it.

It had been a week since she’d last seen him at the supermarket.

Pacing in the kitchen, she picked up her phone, her fingers trembling as she dialed the Hadley Cove Police Department.

“Hey, I’m looking for Paul Wright. I think he’s just newly rejoined the force, and I—“

“Yes, I can connect you. May I ask who is calling?”

“This is Emma.”

“Alright, Emma. I’ll patch you over to him.”

“Thank you.” As the line clicked, she sat and started drumming her nails on the table.

“Emma?”

“Uh, hey, Paul. I changed my mind. Are you free this afternoon?” Emma asked.

“My shift is ending in fifteen minutes, so I can meet you—“
