The Gatekeeper eyed the angel over the rim of his glasses as they shook hands. “If I’m old, I don’t even wanna know what that makes you.”

Adam smiled, though it wilted quickly.

Tony lifted his hand in farewell. “Since my work here is done, I’ll be on my way.”

Everyone thanked him for his help and wished him well, and I jumped up to give him another tight squeeze. Had he not been able to access Thane’s mind, then I might have lost my mate forever. I owed Tony my life.

Reading my thoughts, the Gatekeeper shook his head and kissed my forehead. “No favors between us, baby girl. Just take care of yourself.”

Too many emotions tumbled through my mind, threatening to release in a torrent of tears. As he left, I settled for sniffling and returned to my seat.

“We need to find the super weapon, the one that neutralizes any type of magic,” Ivan said in a nasal voice as he held a bloody napkin to his nose. The poor kid’s face had slammed into the table when the spell lifted.

“How do you know about this weapon?” Nathan asked, surprising most of us. The blue-winged angel rarely spoke, and to be honest, I forgot he was there most of the time.

Today, he wore a button-down, collared shirt like the other angels, and he’d pulled his shoulder-length dark brown hair back into a man bun. His matching brown eyes regarded Ivan with interest.

“It’s what brought me to the human world,” Ivan explained around the napkin. “To fight Galina. But now we can use it against Colin.”

“So this super weapon actually exists?” I asked the angels. I’d promised Ivan I would help him find it, but I wasn’t sure the thing existed until now.

Adam and Nathan exchanged a cautious look before Nathan answered. “Yes, but using it is risky. In the wrong hands, it would unleash chaos upon the world.”

Nothing I hadn’t dealt with before.

“First, we need to make sure Kit and Angela are safe.” Thane took my hand. “We’ll be back.”

Lena looped her arm through Thane’s. “Not without me.”

“Or me.” Ivan jumped to his feet and tossed the bloody napkin into the trash can. Blood still streaked under his nose, but looks were the least of our worries. He took my free hand.

I wasn’t going to argue. Depending on how we found Kit, we might need all the help we could get.

Adam gave a brief nod. “I welcome her help, and we may need her mother’s as well.”

Asking Octavia to assist the DEA was like begging the devil to take your soul. I crinkled my nose. No thanks.

The world disappeared around us, and a heartbeat later, solid ground reformed beneath our feet. The white columns of Octavia’s two-story Virginia mansion loomed in front of us, and hovering grey clouds weren’t helping my impression of the place.

I strode to the front doors and wasted no time trying the handles. Proper etiquette wasn’t my concern right now, nor had it ever been. Both doors opened, which was as good a welcome as any.

“Kit!” I called out. “Where are you?” My words echoed down the long, empty hallways leading to the separate wings of the house.

“Let’s split into pairs to search.” Thane’s footsteps tapped against the black-and-white checkered tile floor. “Ivan, you go with V.”

I blinked at him, not expecting or wanting him to leave my side.

Catching my look, he sighed. “I hate leaving you, but his phoenix abilities are superior to mine.”

The lingering sorrow and guilt in our soul link after the nightmares made more sense now. Even though I disagreed with his plan, I didn’t argue because he wasn’t entirely wrong about their abilities.

His dragon scales might protect him—if they activated at all. Thanks to the mage attack, he hadn’t had a chance to work with Tundreg on controlling them yet, but his scales wouldn’t do much to protect me unless he acted as my shield.

However, I was no damsel in distress, and I had more than enough firepower on my own. Maybe I should be the one protecting him.

“We’ll head left.” He nodded Lena in that direction and they took off.

Ivan and I jogged down the right wing, our footsteps echoing down the hall. We checked every door. Most were locked, but no one answered when we knocked. I’d come back and pick them or blast them open later if necessary.
