Taking a deep breath, Angela nodded. “Okay. What do I need to do?”

Adam opened his hand toward the sword. “Pick up the Last Hope, and it will form into the weapon you desire.”

Pushing back her chair, Angela stood and reached for the weapon with a shaky hand. She paused just before touching it.

“You’ve got this, babe,” Kit said reassuringly. “I’m right here.”

Angela took another deep breath and gripped the hilt. The slightest twinge of jealousy pinched my heart, but I brushed it aside. That reaction was exactly why I wasn’t the right person for the job, no matter how much the damned tempting sword tried to convince me otherwise.

As Angela lifted the blade off the table, a slight shudder passed through her body. The blade and hilt extended, lengthening and changing shape until she held a steel staff.

She rolled it in her hands, examining the new weapon with awe shining in her eyes. “This thing’s capable of doing what you said? Resisting all magic?”

“It is indeed,” Adam said. “Much like yourself, great power lies in unexpected places.”

Angela blushed. “I don’t have great power, not without this thing.”

The archangel smiled. “Do not underestimate yourself.”

“One weapon to rule them all,” I said, trying to hide the wistfulness in my voice.

Thane chuckled, but Kit stared at me across the table like I’d grown a second head. “How do you do that?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Do what?”

“Make references to pop culture things you should know but definitely don’t.” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “One ring to rule them all? Ring a bell?”

“So you’re calling your fiancée a hobbit?”

I mean, no one could resist that, right?

If looks could kill, I’d be dead so many times over from Kit alone.

“I know how to use a staff,” Angela cut in before any deaths occurred and peered at the sigils engraved in the steel, “but how does this magic work?”

“Mr. Munro, would you be up for the challenge of teaching Ms. Smith to wield her new weapon?” Adam asked.

Thane raised his eyebrows. “I’d be honored, but surely Kit would like to train her?”

Kit hesitated before shaking her head. “Want, yes. But I won’t be able to push her as hard as you can.”

Angela glanced between them with a gulp.

“I can push her, but I’m still just a human,” Thane said with an unusual tightness in his voice. “An angel like Nathan is a better choice to handle that kind of magic.”

His frustration leaked through our soul link. My mate was far from just a human, but I understood what he meant. He didn’t think he was strong enough to help her. I knew otherwise, and I’d spend as long as it took to prove it to him, too.

“The weapon should work similar to your scythe,” the archangel explained, his calm expression showing no concern over the decision. “Nathan and I are busy focusing our efforts on finding a mage capable of opening portals.”

“Weren’t you bringing in two mages earlier?” Kit asked.

Adam sighed. “They overestimated their skill.”

“This would be a good time to teach you control over your scales,” Tundreg said. The skin around the blind dragonman’s pale yellow eyes crinkled as he smiled in Thane’s direction.

“Plus, you can test out your dragon scales against the Last Hope’s magic,” I added, urging my confidence in him through our bond.

“Let’s not waste any time then.” Thane stood and leaned down to brush his lips across mine. “We’ll be in the training room.”
