My legs froze in place, every part of me going numb. I could do nothing but stand and watch in horror as Xavier fed on my brother’s dying body. When Maddox was as still as Thane, the vampire looked up and smiled, his chin coated with crimson.

“You’re mine, little bird.”

Once again, thick fog swirled around me and stole the light. Finally able to move my quivering legs, I screamed out my rage and agony and stumbled forward, raising the stake.

Except they had vanished.

The world had disappeared, nothing but grey mist swirling around me.

Falling to my knees, I squeezed my eyes shut as grief washed over me, a tidal wave of pain ready to destroy everything in its path. I wrapped my trembling arms around my middle, sobbing.

Had I really just lost my little brother and my soulmate?

My eyebrows drew together, and I opened my eyes.

Wait…

Maddox had died three years ago. I remembered the agonizing grief vividly, and I wiped away my tears, confusion settling in.

The fog parted, and I was back in my penthouse, kneeling on the dining room floor. I stood and blinked against bright morning light streaming in from the tall windows. A crashing noise snapped my attention to the side.

Sitting on my L-shaped couch, Maddox laughed and cheered, raising his game controller in the air like a trophy. Beside him, Thane grumbled and slumped back against the cushion. I flicked my gaze to the TV, where a race car had crashed. They were playing video games together.

My heart pounded against my ribs, almost painful in its intensity.

What the fuck was going on?

“Such a sweet sight, isn’t it?” Xavier’s voice whispered behind me.

I spun to face the Master Vampire. “What are you doing here?”

In the morning light, deep red highlights sparkled within his brown hair. His dark brown eyes burned red, a sign of his telepathic communication with his minions.

From all corners of the penthouse, newer vampires scrambled into view, climbing down the walls and creeping forward. Their emaciated, still-rotten bodies and long claws scraping against the floor made them a thing born from nightmares.

They were on my brother and Thane in an instant, pinning them down on the living room rug. As bloodthirsty vampires hissed around them, terror-filled Maddox and Thane’s faces, and their gazes pleaded with me.

I cried out, raising my hands to stop the bloodsuckers hurting them.

Xavier’s lips were at my throat, and his unnaturally powerful arms held me tight to his chest. His hard arousal pressed against my back, and bile splashed up my esophagus. I swallowed against the burn, keenly aware of his fangs so close to my skin.

“Which one will it be?” His warm breath fluttered the hairs on my neck.

Something wasn’t right, and I didn’t mean how ridiculous it was that vampires still breathed.

No, this was the second time he’d asked me that, and he’d killed them both the last time. I closed my eyes, struggling to remember anything before that horrible moment.

I’d been walking to a date with Thane, but what happened before?

Fog. Confusion…

Fear.

I grabbed onto that strand and yanked my mind toward it, willing the memory to surface. I had felt afraid, but of what?

Xavier’s fangs brushed against my skin, distracting me and shooting a shiver down my spine. And not the good kind of shiver.

Think, Veronica.
