Kit slammed her palms down on the table. “Are you fucking kidding me right now?”

“This was long before you agreed to work with us, Ms. Parker.”

“Had I known you would ask that bloodsucking shitstain for help, I would’ve agreed earlier,” she fumed.

While I understood her anger and felt it as keenly as she did, it wasn’t like Kit to get riled up so quickly. That was my job. Even though her colorful and accurate description of Xavier impressed me, she was in dire need of a nap.

“It is in the past, Katherine,” Adam said gently but firmly. “My pride does not stop me from accepting all help dealing with matters of utmost importance to the Community.” His attention returned to Thane and me. “What did you promise him?”

“Full immunity,” Thane said.

If I thought Kit was angry before, it was nothing compared to outrage contorting her face now. As she clenched her fists on the table, the lights flickered and the building shook, knocking things off the walls.

Outside the conference room’s glass wall—which hadn’t shattered yet, much to my amazement—a reaper carrying a giant stack of paperwork lost his balance and fell over, sending papers flying everywhere.

It would’ve been comical if it weren’t because my best friend was losing her shit.

Angela laid her hand on Kit’s arm. “That’s not helpful.”

Instantly, the lights stopped flickering, and the building ceased its shaking. Kit rubbed her face with her hands and groaned. “I’m sorry.”

“Go get some sleep,” I said.

“Don’t tell me what to do,” she snapped back with a withering glare. As the silence stretched on after her outburst, she sighed. “Sorry. You’re right. I’m exhausted.”

I glanced at Ivan, who caught my look and nodded.

“I’ll take you both home,” he said. He got to his feet and stood behind their chairs, placing his hands on each woman’s shoulder.

Kit gave me a half-hearted smile just before they winked out of sight.

She didn’t need to apologize—this was a shitty situation and grim news to digest.

“How does Edric plan to get Angela close enough to Queen Fiadh?” Adam asked.

“He didn’t say, but whatever it is, I think it’d be best for me to go with them,” Thane said.

I blinked at him, my pulse immediately racing. “What? Why? Not that we trust Edric completely, but why you?”

“My dragon scales will keep her protected if we’re attacked, and I can jump us away,” he explained.

“If you go, I go,” I said.

He shook his head with a look that said he wouldn’t budge. “Colin’s turned his obsession on you, for whatever reason. Maybe he has a thing for gorgeous blondes. Whatever it is, you need to keep him distracted, away from the queen.”

Ugh. This was why I hated living my life by logic. His plan made perfect sense, and I hated every part of it. I also hated knowing he thought the queen was gorgeous, even though it was completely accurate.

Jealousy was never a good look on anyone, but we all had flaws. Some more than others, and I never claimed to be flawless.

“Fine, but I still claim the right to kill Colin first,” I sighed.

Thane grinned. “I’m not sure we’ll need more than one kill, but sure.”

I shot him an exasperated look. “Never underestimate a determined necromancer.”

A warning signal lifted the hairs on the back of my neck.

Was I right without realizing it?
