“The nurse had Lindy talk it over with him when you two were at the hospital this morning.” She must have talked to him while I was getting us coffee. “Lindy put some kind of spell on him, because he agreed to start a small dose tomorrow.”

“Of course she did.” I don’t hear much else of the conversation because I can’t get over the magic that is Lindy.

Before I can get my phone back in my pocket it rings again as I hold it in my hands. “I’m popular today.” I glance down at the screen.

This time it’s Savage. He’s called me every single day since he heard about my dad, to check in. This is probably that daily call.

“Hey, what’s going on?” I say.

“Hey, man,” Savage says. “How’s your dad doing today?”

“Great. He was totally out of it last night but this morning, so much better.” I fill him in on this morning, my call with Dr. Thomas.

“That’s good. Really good,” he says. “He gave us all a scare. It’ll be nice for you to have him back in the Village for a while.”

“Yeah, it will,” I say.

I can hear the crooked grin in Savage’s voice as he speaks. “I’ve got great news for you.”

“What is it?” I ask.

“I think they’ve found a solution. To your problem. I overheard Paige and Bronson talking about it the other day.”

“My problem?” I ask.

“Uh… yeah! The woman you’ve got yourself attached to?” he says, with a laugh.

“Right.” My head goes fuzzy. “Lindy.”

“Turns out the Hamlet is looking for a high school English teacher. With her degree, they are sure she can manage. Bronson and Paige are willing to take her on as their responsibility if she’ll teach at the school.” He laughs again. “You’re free!”

I echo back to him, “Free?”

Free means me with no Lindy. The way it was before she snuck on board my plane. I can barely remember that time now. Imagining my world without Lindy in it makes a cold, sick feeling come over me.

A staticky silence stretches out between us.

“Hey,” he says, his voice low with concern. “You good?”

It takes me a moment to form words. “Yeah. Fine.”

“I thought you’d want this,” Savage says, clear concern in his voice.

“I did,” I say. I correct myself. “I do.”

“Huh.” He takes a moment, then says, “I’ll keep you updated if I hear anything else, but you’ll probably be hearing from Rockland in a few weeks.”

“Thanks, man.”

I hang up the phone, a dull throbbing between my temples. I never did have that talk with Rockland about what to do with Lindy. Sounds like he’s taken it upon himself to form a plan.

What do I do?
