“By whom,” Izel corrected.

“Don’t be a fucking grammar nazi,” Duncan snarled. “Who’s watching us?”

Orion wanted to know, too. He moved closer to Izel and Duncan, no longer feeling safe. Not that he felt safe having been poofed to this place. That alone wigged him out.

Now Izel claimed that someone was observing them. Or something.

Stop spooking yourself. You’re scared enough without imagining the worst.

“Something wholly evil.”

Okay, it was something worse. “Just get us out of here,” Orion said.

Izel grabbed Orion’s and Duncan’s hands, and then Orion felt woozy again. Before they vanished from the forest, Orion could have sworn he saw two red eyes glaring at him.

Chapter Three

Duncan was grateful to finally be in the familiar comfort of his kitchen. He scanned the room, searching for Orion, but only saw Izel still by his side. “Where’s Orion?”

Izel’s voice was flat and emotionless as he stated, “He wanted to go home.”

Duncan couldn’t believe that fate had paired him with a reaper. Orion may have rejected him, but at least he showed his emotions, unlike Izel who was devoid of them.

Now Duncan was at a loss as to what to do. His cheetah was torn between chasing after his human mate and staying with Izel. Duncan’s mind raced as he struggled to come up with a solution to this unbelievable mess.

Until Izel was yanked away like he’d been in the forest. Fucking great.

Duncan needed a goddamn drink.

That was for the best. Duncan needed to sort shit out, and he couldn’t do that with either mate attached to him.

Too bad Izel hadn’t transported Duncan to the Fearless Fox. Now he would have to drive there. As Duncan walked out of the kitchen, where he’d simply appeared, Beckett stopped him dead in his tracks.

“You’re just going to walk out and not tell us what in the hell happened?”

Duncan wasn’t even sure what just happened. He still felt the danger of that damn forest, still felt as if it held ancient beings nestled inside of it.

Worse, he could have sworn he’d seen glowing red eyes before they’d left. Just because he lived in a preternatural world didn’t mean he was used to that kind of thing.

“What do you want to know?” Duncan asked, not really wanting to stop and talk. What he wanted was a shot or three of Red Spanking.

“Everything.” Beckett looked incredulously at him as Hayden and Cormac entered the living room. “You three just vanished,” Beckett said. “Where did you go? Where are the other two?”

“I ate them.” Duncan gripped the keys in his hand harder. “Can we talk about this later? I’m late for a date.” With my drink.

“Date?” Hayden frowned. “But you found your mates. Why are you going on a date?”

Duncan groaned as he let his head fall back. This was such a messed-up day, and all he wanted to do was escape.

“You need to talk?” Beckett asked.

With a roll of his eyes, Duncan walked out, jumped into his Jeep, and took off, driving away from the insanity. He was close with his brothers, but talking about his feelings wasn’t at the top of his priority list.

Getting shitfaced was.

He couldn’t get to the bar fast enough.

Duncan parked in the lot on the side of the building and locked his Jeep before heading inside. There were already people sitting at the bar as Duncan strolled in and grabbed a stool at the opposite end of where everyone else sat.
