His thoughts were a complete one-eighty from just ten minutes ago, but now that he was with Orion, there was no denying how much he wanted his mate.

Mates.

“From what I’ve heard and seen, it’s a bond like nothing else.” Duncan turned the bottle slowly on the table. “A connection that runs far deeper than anything we’d experience with anyone who wasn’t a mate.”

The subject was tabled when the waitress came over, asking if they wanted something to eat. Duncan ordered a burger and fries, hoping the food helped to absorb the liquor. Orion ordered the same.

When she walked away, Duncan continued. “You’ll inherit my ability to heal.”

“I’ll shift?” Orion’s eyes widened.

Duncan grinned. “No. You’ll just heal faster, and you won’t have to worry about diseases anymore.”

Orion seemed to contemplate what Duncan was saying. “What will I gain from Izel?”

That was a damn good question. “I haven’t the faintest fucking clue.”

Orion swallowed roughly. “We won’t have to reap souls, will we?”

God, Duncan hoped not. He wasn’t keen on wearing a robe, carrying a scythe, or guiding a dead person to infinity and beyond. “Again, I have no fucking clue.”

“Ugh.” Orion fell back into his seat. “We need Izel here to answer our questions.”

Duncan sat forward. “Not that I’m ungrateful that you’re here, but why are you so open to all of this suddenly? The last we spoke, you wanted nothing to do with me or Izel.”

“Let’s just say curiosity won out.”

When their food arrived, they dug in. Duncan wasn’t sure if he should press his luck and ask why Orion was suddenly curious. The guy had been downright irate in the forest. Then again, who wouldn’t be if they’d been transported to such a place? The only answer was that Orion felt the pull, even if he didn’t know it. That undeniable connection between them, a need to be near one’s mate.

“This is really good,” Orion said after he swallowed and wiped his mouth with his napkin. “I’ve never had their food before.”

“They have a good cook.” A few times Hayden had brought home food from the bar, which Duncan had helped himself to. Not that he didn’t like Milly’s cooking, but she never cooked greasy food, one of Duncan’s favorite things to eat.

When Duncan took another bite of his burger, he felt a hand caress his nape. His first instinct was to snarl and demand the person show themselves, until he remembered Izel.

Orion jumped, his eyes wide.

“Izel is here,” Duncan said. “He’s just not showing himself.”

“I swear, half the time I think I’m going insane,” Orion said. “Why can’t he show himself?”

Duncan grinned. “You want him to magically appear in front of everyone? Besides, I think his fashion choice might raise more than one brow.”

Just thinking about the leather-clad outfit made Duncan’s cock twitch. Hardly anything was left to the imagination. The guy was as ripped at Duncan was. Normally Duncan didn’t like men his size. He preferred twinks, like Orion, but damn if he couldn’t appreciate Izel’s physique.

Orion jumped again and then scowled. “Knock it off. It’s wigging me out that an unseen hand is touching me.”

The waitress frowned when she approached. She must have heard Orion. “Was there anything else you gentlemen wanted?”

“We’re good,” Duncan said.

“A Coke,” Orion replied, pushing aside his bottle of beer.

“Same.” Duncan was still not focusing like he should because of the Red Spanking. Switching things up would help. “Light ice, please.”

With a nod, she walked away, leaving Duncan alone with Orion. As alone as one could be in a bar. And Izel, if he was still there.

“Can I ask you something?” Duncan rested his forearms on the table after he slid his half-eaten plate aside.
