“Never mind,” Orion said bullet-fast, though his mind was still on Izel’s feelings being muted for so long. Now they were returning.

Was that a good thing? Although Orion liked talking with Izel, loved seeing the gorgeous man smile—because seeing Izel smile was like watching rainbows burst across the sky—were he and Duncan doing Izel more harm than good? What if he got too choked up sending an innocent to the afterlife, like a mom of four or a child?

Nope. Orion slammed the lid on that thought because he didn’t want to think about a child or mom, or even a single dad, dying. Instead, he asked, “Do you have a cell phone?”

“I have never needed one,” Izel said. “Should I get one?”

Orion cracked up.

“What?” Izel asked, one of his brows arching upward perfectly.

“I’m just trying to picture a reaper texting.” Orion had no idea why he found it that funny, but he did. “It would just be cool if I had a way of contacting you when you’re not here.”

“Then I shall acquire one,” Izel said.

“Do you have a home?” Orion leaned back on his elbows, wishing he could go back to sleep instead of having to head to work in a little bit. After last night, he wouldn’t mind staying in bed all day, covers over his head, snoring his butt off.

“Reapers don’t require a home, and you are asking a lot of questions, mi amor.” Izel had that far-off look again.

Orion was going to talk to Duncan about offering Izel a place to stay. It wasn’t right that he was out there doing Jaden’s bidding, with no place to call his own.

“So you do speak Spanish. I suspected as much,” Orion said.

“I speak many languages.” Izel winked. “It is part of my job.”

“Can you teach me another language?” Orion asked.

The smile on Izel’s face was breathtaking. “Which language do you wish to learn?”

Orion pursed his lips. “Let me think about it. By the way, Santee and I are going to Fearless Fox tonight to sing karaoke. Do you want to come?”

Izel’s brows shot up. “Are you inviting me to hang out with you?”

God, it seemed a lot of things were foreign concepts to Izel. The poor guy had missed out on so much. “Didn’t you have any friends when you were alive?”

“One,” Izel admitted. “Necalli. We used to hunt together.” A fine blush colored Izel’s cheeks, and it looked super sexy on him. “He was also my secret lover.”

“Oh.” Orion thought he might feel jealous, but he was interested to learn more. “Secret? Did that mean he was married or something?”

“I would never cross that line,” Izel said proudly. “No, being with another man was forbidden, so we had to come up with excuses to get away from our village.”

“Man, that sucks,” Orion said. “I’m glad I’ve never had to hide in the closet.”

Izel tapped the end of Orion’s nose. “You are living in more tolerant times.”

Orion snorted. “Not as tolerant as some would believe. I’m just glad Midnight Falls is so open-minded.”

Even so, Orion had had a bully in high school, a guy who thought it was his life’s mission to torture Orion, which Chad did every time he saw Orion. Typical high school jock who was always showing off in front of his buddies and the giggling girls.

Orion couldn’t get out of high school fast enough. Thank god he’d never run across Chad or his buddies after they’d graduated.

“Milly is serving breakfast. Do you want to join us?” Orion stood, waiting for Izel’s reply.

The guy stood. “I’d love to.”

“Can reapers eat?” Orion asked as they exited the bedroom.

“Yes.”
