“Does the food taste different or not?”

“I wouldn’t know since the food I dine on now wasn’t around when I was alive.” He looked deep in thought. “I have no clue if the burger I’m eating is supposed to taste that way or if it’s just me.”

“But is it good?” Orion asked as they walked down the stairs.

“I think so.”

“Then I think you have regular taste buds.”

Izel smirked. “As opposed to reaper taste buds?”

That made Orion stop so he could laugh his ass off. “You said that, not me.”

Orion found Izel charming, on a somewhat innocent level, though he didn’t doubt for a second how powerful the guy was. Even so, he liked that they’d had a talk, because getting to know Izel was both sad and a hoot.

Maybe being mated to Izel and Duncan wasn’t such a bad thing. Orion decided he would give this mating a chance, be nicer to his mates, and see where things took him.

Chapter Seven

“We need to talk.” Jaden didn’t care that he’d just interrupted an Ultionem meeting in Christian’s office. Everyone turned to look at him since Jaden had just appeared in the room, but no one seemed surprised that people just “popped” in.

“It is customary to announce yourself beforehand,” Christian said with slight irritation.

“It’s also customary to invite all the big dogs to one of your meetings.” Not that Jaden would attend. He’d spent his entire existence in one form of battle or another, especially against his brother, Panahasi. It was nice to just chill at home with his mate. Although Jaden still had responsibilities, he wasn’t filled with so much self-loathing or a need to end it all just so he could get out of his miserable life.

Now that he was mated to Hilton, his gorgeous little bunny shifter, Jaden looked forward to each and every day. Even if some of his responsibilities sucked.

Like now.

“You’ve never shown any interest in becoming a member,” Nazaryth, the leader of the winged beasts, said.

“He’s not.” Maverick smirked. “He’s just fucking with Christian.”

“How do you know that?” Zeus, the alpha of the gray wolves, asked.

“Can we wrap up this meeting?” Ahm asked. “Bryce and I have plans this evening.”

With a sigh, Christian waved his hand. “We can continue our discussion at another date.”

Panahasi threw his hand out, and a vortex appeared.

“Can I hitch a ride home in that thing?” Maverick asked.

“What about your motorcycle?” Panahasi asked. “You drove it here.”

Maverick chuckled. “I was just messing with you. The Santiago brothers are meeting up with me so we can go riding.”

Jaden wished he could be as carefree as the leader of the timber wolves, but then again, Maverick had his own set of problems to deal with in Brac Village.

So did Jaden. He commanded a legion of reapers and not everything always ran smoothly.

As soon as Jaden stepped through the vortex, he found himself in his backyard, greeted by a colorful explosion of vibrant flowers. Each plant seemed to reach toward the sun, bursting with life. It was like walking into a secret garden, overflowing with delicate blooms and lush greenery. His mate had an incredible talent for gardening.

“There are times when I wish I lived in a house,” Panahasi said as he looked around. “My compliments to Hilton.”

Unfortunately, Panahasi couldn’t move. The demon warriors drew their strength from the apartment building they lived in. Panahasi would be just fine if he moved, but the building in the demon realm would lose a lot of its defenses and powers if the demon leader rented a U-Haul.

“It’s a nice sanctuary,” Jaden admitted. He’d cast every spell he had in his arsenal to keep his home hidden from the outside world. Jaden didn’t want any harm to come to his mate, especially if Hilton was home alone.
