Duncan held his hands up, the container tucked between his elbow and chest. “I’m just giving you a hard time, sweetheart, but I’m still not sharing my food.”

Orion groaned. “You’re like a big kid, Duncan.” He looked around again. “I’ll share mine with you, Izel.”

“Now I know who my favorite mate is,” Izel replied as Duncan opened the driver’s door.

“Just get in, you two.” He climbed into the Jeep, making sure to keep his container on his lap.

“No one is going to jack your food.” Orion fastened his seat belt as Izel appeared in the back seat. Duncan hated that his mate had to stay hidden, and god, the guy was so damn gorgeous. “You can put the container down while you drive.”

Grumbling to himself, Duncan handed the container to Izel. “If you crack that lid, I’m making you walk home. I owe you for smacking me twice in there, anyway.”

It dawned on Duncan that he’d just referred to his home as Izel’s, too. Duncan was going to make sure Izel knew that, too.

When Duncan headed down the street, Izel popped the lid open and took a long whiff. “The smell is divine. I hope I can resist the temptation.”

Duncan rolled his eyes, knowing that Izel was only teasing him. But inwardly, he loved that the guy had a sense of humor after not feeling too much of anything for thousands of years.

He couldn’t wait to see Izel’s true personality shine through. Just like he loved how relaxed Orion was with them now, compared to how he’d been in the beginning.

They might have a lot to overcome as far as the Slayer went, but Duncan was looking forward to spending as much time with the two as possible, which wouldn’t be hard since they were practically ordered to stick to each other like glue.

Chapter Eleven

“What is that wonderful smell?” Bran asked as he and Santee walked into the kitchen twenty minutes after Orion and his mates had made it back to Duncan’s house.

“My mom’s cooking.” Orion had scooped a portion onto a plate, the container still sitting on the table. “Before you ask if I’ll share, go see Duncan. He has the lion’s share and ran upstairs like a kid who’s stolen a Christmas present from under the tree.”

“You can forget it,” Cormac said as he entered the kitchen. “Asking Duncan to share food is like asking an eighty-year-old to run a marathon and come in first.”

Orion frowned. What an odd analogy. He also felt a bit guilty using Cormac as an excuse without first asking if he would be okay with the lie.

Then again, according to Duncan, Cormac would have lectured them about not being honest with Orion’s mom until their brains melted. No thanks. No one in their right mind looked to be lectured.

“Fine.” Orion sighed when he saw the way Bran and Santee licked their lips. “Just don’t expect a heaping amount. If you want more, go see my mom.”

“I love your mom.” Santee grabbed two plates from the cupboard and two forks from a drawer before he sat and passed the empty plates to Orion.

“It smells good, but what is it?” Bran asked.

“Spanish cooking with love,” Santee crooned. “Trust me, Bran. You’re not going to be disappointed.”

“You’ve eaten at my house twice,” Orion reminded Santee. Not that that had been his friend’s fault. Santee had been too busy dealing with a possessive brother who never let Santee out when it wasn’t work related and had only agreed if it was part-time. Marvell had truly been a psycho.

“It only takes two meals to know when someone is an excellent cook, and you, my friend, have a chef as a mom,” Santee replied. “Your house always smelled wonderful…both times I was there.”

Orion scooped some of the paella onto each plate and gave Bran and Santee only one churro each. They were his favorite, and he felt like Duncan about sharing them.

Feeling bad about using Cormac, Orion stood, grabbed another plate and fork, and scooped some food onto the plate. He handed it to Cormac who was looking in the refrigerator.

Cormac frowned, as if he hadn’t expected Orion to share with him. “Thank you, Orion.”

It’s my payment for lying about you. “You’re welcome. If you want more—”

“Go see your mom?” Cormac smirked. The guy really was a knock-out. He had long hair like Hayden and the same dark gray eyes, but he seemed rougher around the edges, until he smiled.

Why did Orion suspect that Cormac didn’t smile that often?

“No, I was going to say go tackle Duncan before he scarfs down enough food for a small army. You should have seen the size of the container my mom gave him. You would think she favors him over me.”
