Izel looked around before he hurried to Duncan and Orion, keeping his scythe at a healthy distance from them. “Is that the Slayer?”

“How in the hell should I know?” Duncan looked around. “I’ve seen some pretty fantastical things since we came here through Panahasi’s portal. It might be the Slayer.”

Orion was desperate to tell his mates that the beast’s name was Coatl, but his voice was still gone.

A blinding light flashed, forcing Orion to look away or have his eyeballs melt into his skull. Duncan and Izel had turned their heads, too.

When the light faded, Orion looked back to where it had been. A man, with short mahogany hair, styled to perfection, and blue eyes that shone brightly, stood there like there wasn’t a deadly threat to his right.

“The Keeper finally arrives,” Izel said. “By the way, he also goes by primal source or Aldrin.”

Orion looked wide-eyed at a man who didn’t look old enough to be the primal of anything. Then again, Izel didn’t look over two thousand years old and Duncan didn’t appear to be a few hundred.

Coatl let loose a battle cry and charged toward Aldrin. Orion held his breath, praying the guy wasn’t defeated. Aldrin lifted his hand, palm out, his upper lip curled. Coatl shot upward, suspended midair the way Orion had been.

“I made your cell as cozy as fucking possible instead of letting you rot in the underworld, but that wasn’t good enough for you.” Aldrin curled his fingers inward, forming a fist. Coatl screamed as he bent unnaturally backward, as if his bones were made of rubber.

Orion wanted to cover his eyes because he didn’t want to see Coatl’s head almost touch the back of his ankles, but he couldn’t look away, no matter how much he wanted to. Duncan, Izel, and the Lovato brothers seemed just as transfixed.

Even the angel kept his gaze locked onto them.

Aldrin turned his head and looked the angel over. “What are you doing here, Gavril?”

Gavril chucked a thumb over his shoulder. “Got hijacked by these guys. If you want to bend someone else in half, have at them.”

Aldrin’s blue gaze swung to Panahasi. Orion hoped that Aldrin didn’t hurt the tall guy. He liked Panahasi.

“Bringing an angel here was practically handing Coatl the keys to his cell. It would have also meant Gavril’s death.”

“Who’s Coatl?” Izel asked.

Orion didn’t like it when Aldrin’s attention turned toward them. Although stunningly handsome, the guy also had an aura about him that said he could end them all with a single thought.

To Orion’s horror, Aldrin released Coatl, the creature hitting the ground. Then Aldrin walked toward Orion and his mates, and Coatl lifted into the air, his arms slinging behind him as if invisible handcuffs had been placed on him.

“My existence isn’t my fault!” Coatl shrieked. “Every one of these bastards around us has had a hand in who I am.”

Looking annoyed, Aldrin snapped his fingers, and although Coatl’s mouth moved, no sound came out. Now the bastard had a taste of what he’d done to Orion.

“Much better,” Aldrin said as he stopped in front of Orion. “So you and your mates are the cause of all this hoopla.”

Orion opened his mouth to argue that none of them were at fault, forgetting that he couldn’t talk.

“What is wrong with him?” Izel’s brows furrowed.

“The Slayer silenced him,” Duncan snarled.

“May I?” Aldrin asked Orion as he reached out, but stopped short of touching him.

Orion nodded, though Duncan snarled and Izel moved closer. When Aldrin placed his hand across Orion’s neck, it was like cool water drawn from a fountain in heaven slipped down his throat. Orion’s eyes widened as he felt the cool sensation filling him with a sense of peace and tranquility. When Aldrin removed his hand, Orion’s voice returned, stronger than before.

“Thank you,” he said. “What are you going to do with Coatl?”

“Why do you keep calling him that?” Duncan asked.

“He said that was his real name.”

Aldrin shook his head. “Another lie. That word translates to snake.”
