“He’s my boss… or he was.” He’s also the man I love… the man I wanted to share my future with, the man I thought I knew so well. Except I didn’t. Evidently.
“What did this man want?” Mom asks.
“He didn’t say. I explained that Hunter’s father is dead, but that just made the man furious.”
“Why?”
I shrug my shoulders. “It didn’t make sense. The man said he was an old friend of Hunter’s dad, and yet he didn’t even know he’d died. He started shouting at me, and I didn’t handle things very well, because Hunter had to come out of his office. I guess that’s why he fired me, but the things he said don’t add up. It was all so weird. The man introduced himself. He was gloating about making a success of his life, or something, saying that he’d missed a chance to show Hunter’s father what a proper businessman looked like. I can’t remember—”
My mom suddenly pales, clamping her hand across her mouth.
“What’s wrong, Mom?”
“Julianne?” Dad speaks at the same time, both of us staring at her.
She lowers her hand, her lips trembling. “I’ve just remembered…”
“What?” Dad asks.
“The name… Hunter.”
“What about it?”
She turns to me. “What’s your boss’s last name?”
“Bennett.”
She glances at Dad, who steps away from me, and I look up to see his face is just as white as Mom’s.
“Oh, no…” Mom cries, shaking her head. “It can’t be.”
“Livia?” I turn to Dad as he says my name, confusion boiling up inside me.
“Yes?”
“Was Hunter’s father called Theodore?”
“Yes, he was.”
“And the man… the man who came to your office…”
“Ken Bevan, you mean?”
Mom howls and I turn to face her again. She’s shaking. “No… please no.” She looks up. “This can’t be happening.”
Dad moves away from me, hobbling over to Mom, and pulling her into his arms.
“It’ll be okay,” he says.
“No… she’ll hate me.”
“She won’t.”
“Who will hate you?” I ask, and Dad straightens, turning to look at me.
“Your m—mom thinks you’re gonna hate her.”
I frown, shaking my head and walk over, standing in front of Mom. “I could never hate you.”
