“Hey,” she says.

“Hey, Sis.” Drew speaks before I can, and I put the phone down between us.

“What are you doing answering Hunter’s calls?”

“He didn’t,” I reply.

“No,” Drew says, when I fall silent, my mind still in turmoil. “I’m at Hunter’s office, and you’re on speaker.”

“Oh. I see. Well, I’m sorry to interrupt your fascinating conversation, but I just wanted to let you know I’ve found myself somewhere to live.”

“You have?” Drew sits forward, his smile giving away how pleased he is by her news. I guess this means he’ll get his apartment back now.

“Yeah. I won’t be moving in just yet, though, so I’m gonna head down to Newport.”

“Okay. I was planning to go down there later this evening. Do you want me to give you a ride?” I sit back, watching Drew talk, recalling my plans for tonight, plans that won’t be happening now… or ever.

“I was hoping you’d offer,” Ella says.

“Why? Because you don’t have a car?”

“Not yet. It’s something else I need to sort out… sooner rather than later.” She coughs slightly. “What time are you leaving?”

“Around six?” Drew says.

“Okay. I’ll be ready.”

“That’ll be a first.”

They both laugh, but I can’t join in, and after a moment’s silence, Ella says, “What’s wrong?”

“What with?” Drew asks.

“Hunter. Is he even there, still?”

“Yeah, I’m here,” I say.

“He’s just not quite himself,” Drew adds on my behalf.

“Who is he then?”

Drew tilts his head again, examining me, and raising his eyebrows slightly. “He’s doing a mighty fine impression of our father, if you want me to be honest.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Hunter’s being an asshole.”

“Thanks,” I murmur.

He gives me a fake smile. “Just telling it how it is.”

“What’s going on?” Ella says.

I’m not in the mood for repeating my story, and I shrug my shoulders, letting Drew know it’s down to him.

He sits back in his seat, fixing his eyes on my phone. “You haven’t met Hunter’s new PA, have you?” he says.

“No. I’ve spoken to her, but never met her. Why?”
