“I’m gonna have to cancel this subscription before it goes out again. I can’t afford things like music streaming right now.”

I click on my web browser and wait for it to open, as my parents get up and start for the door. There hasn’t been time to put my banking app on my phone yet, but I know from experience that, if I want to cancel a payment, I have to do it online. I input a pin number, and wait for my account details to come up, and then my blood turns to ice and I let out a slight cry, clamping my hand over my mouth. Mom’s back with me in an instant, right by my side.

“What’s wrong, Livia?”

“I—I don’t understand.”

“What don’t you understand?”

“I—I haven’t looked at my bank account since the day before Hunter fired me. I had some bills to pay, and I checked my balance first.”

“And?” Dad comes over too, looking down at me.

“I had over five hundred dollars in my account.”

“And you’ve got less than you thought?” Mom says. “Because don’t forget, you paid for your bus ticket, and you’ve bought your phone.”

I shake my head. “It’s not less… it’s more.”

I hand her the phone and she stares down at it. “Oh, my God.” She flops onto the bed beside me. “It must be a mistake. The bank… I mean…”

“What is it?” Dad says.

“The balance is two hundred and fifty thousand, four hundred and twenty-one dollars.”

Dad sucks in a breath. “Did you say two hundred and fifty thousand…?”

“Yes.” Mom looks back at the screen again. “There must be a payment into the account,” she says, scrolling down.

“It’s a bank error, Mom. I’ll contact them on Monday and…”

“You don’t need to,” she says, sighing and handing me back the phone. “Look who sent the payment.”

I glance down, my breath catching in my throat as I read the name ‘H. Bennett’ beside the amount.

“Hunter?” I say, looking back up at her again.

She nods her head. “And look at the date on it.”

I do as she says, unable to hold back my tears when I read that the date of the payment was the day he fired me.

“H—He must think I’m so rude. I’ve had this money for over a week, and I haven’t even thanked him.” I haven’t asked him why, either… and I probably need to, although I guess this makes sense of his confusion when I said I wasn’t sure I had enough money to buy new clothes. He’d have known then that he’d put this money into my account… even though I didn’t.

“I think maybe you need to put that right, don’t you?” Mom says, just as the doorbell rings.

“I’ll get it,” she says, rushing from the room, and Dad puts his arm around me.

“He loves you, sweetheart. Maybe you just need to let him.”

“I need to thank him, too.”

He smiles. “Well, you weren’t sure how to start your conversation with him, so maybe this is your answer.”

“Hmm… maybe it is.”

Mom appears in the doorway, carrying the most enormous bouquet I’ve ever seen.

“Sh—Should I be jealous?” Dad says, smiling.
